Meadowbank, Prince Edward Island
Chief Warrant Officer John Yeo, CD (Retired) became actively involved with The Royal Canadian Legion at the branch and provincial level following his retirement in 2009. Since then, he has dedicated himself to ensuring Veterans and deceased service men and women are honoured and remembered.
John Yeo has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for over a decade, and has served as president of the Charlottetown Legion and then on to PEI Command from 2015 to 2017. Since then, he has continued to serve as executive in several different positions such as vice president, first vice president and chairman. He has also been active in several committees and fundraising campaigns. He has arranged and organized several different initiatives including Korean Veteran functions and Veterans’ Christmas dinners.
Perhaps most notably, John has been the leading force in organizing annual Remembrance Day ceremonies around central Prince Edward Island. Uniquely, in Cornwall, the annual ceremony takes place on the third Sunday in September. The tradition started over one hundred years ago when the farming community often faced muddy roads and inclement weather conditions on November 11. September became a much more agreeable time of year to hold the ceremony. John Yeo has played a major role in preserving the tradition and organizing the event. He has also played a major role in organizing Remembrance Day ceremonies at several nursing homes around Charlottetown and Stratford, ensuring the events take place on site, so residents are able to participate.
Praised for his unwavering commitment to the well-being of fellow Veterans and acting as a strong role model for others who have served, John has gained the respect and admiration of those within the Canadian Armed Forces, the Legion and members of the community.
