Indigenous military service and Chief Joseph Dreaver

Indigenous people have a long and proud tradition of military service across Canada’s history. More than 12,000 First Nations, Inuit and Métis people bravely enlisted during the First World War, Second World War and Korean War. Many members of these communities have continued to serve with distinction in more recent years.

Help students learn more about these contributions and sacrifices through the story of Chief Joseph Dreaver. Students will also think about ways to recognize Indigenous military service, express themselves through art, and thank Veterans for what they have done.

The lesson plans below are designed to build on one another, but you could also choose individual activities that you feel would work best for your class. Content is best suited for grades 7-12 but may be modified for younger audiences.

Order a class pack of Dreaver Veteran recognition cards.
