Flying high

Squeaker the pigeon

You know about police officers, firefighters and school crossing guards. Their job is to keep our communities safe and watch out for problems. The Canadian Armed Forces is our country’s military. The brave people who serve in our military work together to protect all of Canada. They help others around the world too!

Our military has different parts. The Royal Canadian Navy patrols the oceans. The Canadian Army serves on land. But I must admit my favourite is the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) that soars across the sky. What can I say? Pigeons love to fly!

The RCAF is 100 years old in 2024. Members of our air force do many important things. They have fought in battles during wars. They also serve far from home on peacekeeping missions. RCAF members do big things here at home too. They patrol Canada’s borders. They help when planes crash or ships sink. Sometimes they even rescue people in remote towns if forest fires are getting too close.

We should do something for their 100th birthday. Let’s make remembrance paper airplanes! We could draw red poppies and a big “thank you RCAF!” on the sides of the plane.
