Baptized Joseph-Philéas Fortier. Son of Philéas Fortier and Délina Lessard, of Robertsonville, Mégantic, Québec.
He was widower of Fabiana (aka Fabiola) Gosselin (deceased in 1911) and father of three children, under custody of his brother-in-law James Paradis and sister-in-law, Léda Gosselin, of Robertsonville.
Enlisted in the 41st Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he sailed for Great Britain on June 17, 1915, arriving in Plymouth, England, on the 28th. He was transferred to the 22nd Battalion on September 10 and landed at Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, France, on the 15th.
He was hit by shrapnel in the trenches of Saint-Éloi, Ypres, and he died of his wounds in Dickebusch, at the forward first aid station of the No. 6 Canadian Field Ambulance, located in Reninghelst.
