Baptized Joseph-Arthur-Amédée Bonneau. Son of Ludger Bonneau and Delphine Giroux (deceased in 1912), of Montréal (Ste-Cunégonde). Husband of Émilie Pigeon (married in 1914), of Montréal, Québec. He stated being born on 16 February 1881 when he enlisted.

Enlisted on 23 December 1915 in the 163rd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, in May 1916 he left for Bermuda until November. Posted to the 10th Reserve Battalion in England on 7 January 1917, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion in France on 17 May 1917 and joined the latter unit in the Vimy sector, Pas-de-Calais. He was killed in action on 7 July 1917 during the Battle of Lens on Hill 70.
