On September 8, he transferred from the 167th Battalion to the 189th Battalion. On September 23, he sailed for Great Britain, arriving in Liverpool, England, on October 6. On November 27, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion and on the 28th, he crossed over to France, landing in Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, that same day. On December 1, he rejoined his unit in combat. During an assault on Passchendaele, near Abraham Heights, Belgium, he was seriously wounded in the legs and right shoulder by shrapnel. He received first aid and died on November 9, 1917, before stretcher bearers could carry him back to the aid station.
