Son of Kristin (aka Christopher) Gudmundsson and Margaret Goodman, of Selkirk, Manitoba. Enlisted in the NPAM from June 19th, 1941 to August 18th, 1941, then under the 1940 NRMA, regimental number H-600919, from August 20th, 1941 to September 10th, 1941, enrolled September 11th, 1941 in the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps, regimental number H-64719, transferred October 21st, 1941 to D Company, Gren Gunner 2, 16th Platoon, 1st Battalion, Winnipeg Grenadiers.

Served in Manitoba, Hong Kong with C Force. He had 84 days service with the reserve forces and 102 days with the regular forces, including 55 overseas.

To commemorate his sacrifice, the Manitoba government named Goodman Island located on Spruce Lake in his honor in 1989.
