Location:

The BERLIN 1939-1945 WAR CEMETERY is in the district of Charlottenburg, 8 kilometres west of the city centre, on the south side of the Heerstrasse. From Theodor Heuss Platz in the district of Charlottenburg near the exhibition hall complex and next to the Olympic stadium, follow signs for Spandau, proceeding along the Heerstrasse. The Cemetery lies on the Heerstrasse on the left hand side of the road and 3 kilometres from Theodor Heuss Platz. Visitors should drive beyond the BERLIN 1939-1945 WAR CEMETERY to the traffic lights, then turn left directly onto a small one way street running parallel to the Heerstrasse. The Cemetery entrance is on this small one way road.

  • Cemetery– Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery (CWGC) Details from RAF Bomber Command Daily Operations. F/S Mattin was a member of 166 (RAF) Squadron and Bomb Aimer on Lancaster RS 862. The crew were part of operations over Berlin on 20/21 January 1944 and joined a force of 769 aircraft – 495 Lancasters, 264 Halifaxes and 10 Mosquitos. The German nightfighters struck the bomber stream early and continued to attack until the force was well on the way home. A total of 35 aircraft were lost, or 4.6 per cent of the force. RS 863 were airborne at 1625 on 20 Jan 44 from their home base at Kirmington, North Lincolnshire. It was shot down by a night-fighter from 22,000 feet and crashed at Gollin, Brandenburg. Two crew members, Sgt. C. H. Rusk, RCAF, and Sgt. N. F. Early were taken Prisoners of War. Those killed are buried in the Berlin 1939-45 war cemetery. They are: F/S (P) Ronald W. Sutton, age 21, from Lincolnshire, England Sgt (FE) David J. Edwards, age 20, from Bristol, England F/S (BA) Leslie W. Mattin, age 20, from Weston, Ont. F/S Clarence B. Jeffery RAAF, age 26, New South Wales, Australia Sgt (AG) Alexander A. Mansfield, age 19, from Sussex, England
