Son of the Revd. Henry C. Stuart, M.A. and Annie M. Stuart (nee Colston), of Ottawa. Husband of Marguerite Dorothy Stuart (nee Bauld), of Ottawa.

He served as Asst. Director of Military Intelligence 1944. 1929-33. G.S.O.I. R.M.C. of Canada 1934-37. Prof. of Tactics R.M.C. 1937-38. Director Military Operations and Intelligence, National Defence H.Q. 1938-39. Commandant, R.M.C. of Canada 1939-40. Deputy Chief of General Staff (Canada) 1940-41. Vice Chief of General Staff March-December, 1941. Chief of General Staff 1941-43. and Chief of Staff at Canadian Military H.Q. London from 1944. He had also served in the First World War.

Location:

OTTAWA (BEECHWOOD) CEMETERY contains 98 Commonwealth burials of the First World War and 113 from the Second World War. Many of the graves are in the two veterans plots, where there is also a Cross of Sacrifice dedicated to all service casualties buried in the cemetery. The OTTAWA CREMATION MEMORIAL is in a shelter adjoining the newer of the veterans plots in the cemetery and commemorates 26 Second World War servicemen whose remains were cremated elsewhere in Canada and the U.S.A.
