Son of Joseph Elijah Ray and Melissa Angeline Jack, of St. Mary's River, Guysborough, Nova Scotia.
Enlisted with the Halifax Rifles Regiment, he was deployed to the 1st Battalion, Royal Rifles of Canada, on 28 November 1940. He served in Nova Scotia, in Québec, in New Brunswick, in Newfoundland with Force W, in Hong Kong with Force C and in Japan as prisoner of war. He had 1,356 days of service, including 747 overseas.

YOKOHAMA WAR CEMETERY is 9 kilometres west of the city on Yuenchi-Dori, Hodogaya Ward, which branches left off the old Tokkaido highway. The nearest railway station is Hodogaya, 5 kilometres to the north on the JNR line but the cemetery is easily reached by bus from Yokohama station.
