Gerald was amongst the six man crew of Whitley bomber X3287 WS-? which was flown by Sergeant (Pilot) W.T. Ramey, R.C.A.F. The Whitley, which had taken off from R.A.F. Honington, Suffolk at 1713 hours, was on the return leg of a raid on Düsseldorf, Germany, when the starboard engine caught fire over the Dutch coast. Off the coast of Herne Bay, Kent, the aircraft was abandoned, but Gerald, and 21 year old Sergeant (Air Gunner) Peter Bilsborough, of Shipley,
Yorkshire were both drowned. Three other members of the crew were injured and were all treated at the Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital, Herne Bay, Kent.
