Baptized Joseph Arthur Cyrille Eugène Bernard. Son of Cyrille Gonthier dit Bernard and Adèle Blais from St-Gervais, Bellechasse, Québec.
Transferred to the 22nd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 5 January 1917, he took part in the Battle of Vimy Ridge in France. He was killed in action the following 18 July during the Battle of Lens, France, on Hill 70 in the Cité St-Laurent sector.

Loos (Loos-en-Gohelle) is a village to the north of the road from Lens to Bethune. From Lens, take the N43 towards Bethune. Arriving at Loos, turn right at CWGC sign post. The LOOS BRITISH CEMETERY is about 1 kilometre from Loos Church in the southern part of the village.
