Cst. Johnston was born near Lac La Biche, Alberta and had an identical twin brother who is also an RCMP member. Three colleagues and Cst. Johnston and were shot and killed near Mayerthorpe, Alberta.

Growing up, he enjoyed hunting, riding dirt bikes and playing competitive badminton. His passion was racing motorcycles professionally and he was ranked 6th in Canada at one point. Cst. Johnston was known to be fun-loving, adventurous, and kind. He was married to Kelly.

The Fallen Four Memorial Park was created to have a "living legacy" memorial in Mayerthorpe to honour the four members.

Commemorated on Page 207 of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Honour Roll Book.
