The mural depicts various contributions to the war effort, including a munitions worker toiling in a factory, women in uniform, a Spitfire, HMCS Eastview K665 (a River-class frigate that served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1944 – 1946), and men in uniform and on the battlefield.

Medium Tank M4A2E8 Sherman

During the Second World War, the tank used most widely by Canadian and Allied forces was the Sherman. Designed joinly by American and Canadian development team, nearly 50,000 Shermans were produced in Canada and the United States between 1942 and 1945. Shermans saw action during the Korean War and in the post-war training of the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps.

Middleton Drive was named in honour of Frederick Dobson Middleton.

Sir Frederick Dobson Middleton was born in 1825 in Ireland. He attended Sandhurst and commissioned in 1842. He was stationed with his regiment in Australia, New Zealand and India where he was recommended for the Victoria Cross. In 1866, he attended Staff College at Camberley.

Middleton first came to Canada in 1868, accepting a series of staff appointments before returning to England in 1870 and later appointed Commandant at Sandhurst. In 1884, Middleton returned to Canada as a Major-General, officer commanding the Canadian militia. On March 23, 1885, a crisis arose when unrest in the North-West Territories led to the defeat of a North-West Mounted Police and militia Force at Duck Lake. The government responded by sending Middleton to Winnipeg to raise a North-West Field Force to quell the unrest.

On April 6, Middleton led a column towards Batoche, where Louis Riel had established a provisional government. When reinforcements arrived two weeks later, Middleton led his force of 900 men to Batoche, where a battle between the militia and Riel’s forces ensued. Riel surrendered on May 15, ending the resistance. Middleton and his family returned to England in 1890. He died suddenly in his quarters in 1898.

Murray Street was named in honour of James Murray.

General James Murray was born in Scotland in 1721 – 22. He first joined the Scots Brigade in 1736 but then entered the British Army in 1739 – 1740 as a second lieutenant and a captain in 1741. In 1749 – 50 he purchased his Majority and a year later the Lieutenant-Colonelcy, of his regiment. In July 1762, he was promoted to Major-General. As a soldier, Murray saw active service in the West Indies, Cuba, Flanders and the Seven Years’ War in France. From 1758 to 1760, he was in North America. He served under James Wolfe at the siege of Louisbourg and the following year at the siege of Quebec and the Plains of Abraham.

He was appointed governor of the province of Quebec in 1763 and officially remained governor until 1768, though he had been recalled from Canada in 1766. He resumed his military career in 1774, but was later once again appointed governor of a British colony. He retired in 1783 as a General and passed away in 1794.
