"We protected the convoys to the best of our abilities but the submarines of course would also know what they’re doing and they were always wanting to sink the oil tankers, if they could. And it was a terrible situation when they’d sink an oil tanker; the crew usually would burn up in the oil. And that was dastardly. We couldn’t stop to help them or pick them up. Well, they would die anyway but other merchant ships may pick some of them up but that’s about the only thing I can tell you. Camaraderie was the best. We of course depended one upon the other and there was no slackers I can tell you in the navy because they needed me as well as I needed them. And there was no slackers aboard the ships. It was on May 12th [10th] when we captured it [U-889] in 1945. The submarine was out of, behind an iceberg, charging their batteries. And we got a signal that they were there so the two ships, mine and the Oshawa, [HMCS] Rockcliffe and [HMCS] Oshawa, surrounded it, they had no choice but to give up. We caught them flat footed on the surface of the sea. When we boarded the, I did not personally board the U-boat at that time because I was in charge of the party, bringing the seamen to go aboard. The captain [lieutenant] was named [Friederich] Braeucker, 26 year old, had nine years of sea time. He didn’t disclose how many ships he sank but he was very, very knowledgeable. When we brought him aboard the ship back to speak to our captain, of course in the meantime, they destroyed their log and we had no choice to find out their past performances. But the submarine was in good working order, because we escorted it to Shelburne, Nova Scotia. And they interned him there. We left it just outside of the harbour because we had to get back to our convoy."

In earlier times, Colours played a prominent part in many battles. They served to identify units in battle, often marking the focal point of a struggle. Captured Colours were a prized trophy and attracted enemy attention and inspired much gallantry. By the late 19th and 20th Century, however, they were no longer carried in battle, but their status as the heart and soul of a regiment continued, and the laying up of Colours signifies and helps keep holy the memories of the men who sacrificed their lives.

The Governor General's Foot Guards were presented their first Colours in 1874. Twenty-two battle honours - the names of some of the battle in which the regiment fought - were emblazoned along the edges of each flag. Their fifth Colours were presented to the Governor General's Foot Guards on 13 September 1959 by Governor General Vincent Massey and were laid up at the Church of St. Bartholomew on 5 November 1972. St. Bartholomew was formally recognized as The Guards' Chapel on this date. The three earlier Colours were laid up at Christ Church Cathedral and the fourth at the Canadian War Museum.

For many years the Colours hung by the altar until they were removed in 2014. A team under the direction of Anthony Kellett worked with the Governor General's Foot Guards and had the Colours removed, cleaned, conserved and framed. They are now located at the back of the church.

This memorial, a nine-pound naval cannon, was given to the British army garrison stationed in Ottawa in 1854 by the British military. It was purchased by the Canadian government in 1869 and, for many years, fired as the "Noonday Gun".

The Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry First World War Plaques were first unveiled in 1926 in the chapel of the convent of the Sisters Adorers of the Precious Blood, located on Echo Drive across the Rideau Canal opposite Lansdowne Park. Catholic soldiers of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry worshiped in the chapel during August 1914 while quartered in Lansdowne Park. Later, a congregation without a church building used the chapel and when the convent closed in 1984 the plaques were moved with the congregation.

The plaques were likely the idea of Lady Buller, mother of Lieutenant-Colonel Herbert Buller, the first Adjutant and the second Commanding Officer of the Regiment. In the inscription, she included the Founder, Colonel Hamilton Gault; a former Commanding Officer, Colonel Agar Adamson; and the widows of four members of the Regiment. The three brass plaques are mounted on wooden frames. Two of the plaques are similar shields, one in English and one in French.

In 1993, the congregation settled in St. Clement’s Church on Mann Avenue in Sandy Hill. In 2011, the parish was reorganized and St. Clement’s Church was closed. The congregation moved to Saint Anne Catholic Church on Old St. Patrick Avenue and the plaques again moved with them, but were placed in storage in the church's cupboard. In 2012, during initial preparations for the 100th Anniversary of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, the Ottawa Association Branch began searching for the plaques which were eventually found in storage at Saint Anne Church. The Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Association arranged and paid for the professional restoration of the three plaques.

On 19 September 2014, the Colonel-in-Chief, the Right Honorable Adrienne Clarkson unveiled the new rededication plaque alongside the originals which are mounted on the walls in the main entrance of the church.

The Governor General of Canada, Major-General Georges P. Vanier unveiled the National Artillery Memorial at Major's Hill Park in Ottawa on September 21, 1959. Distinguished guests at the ceremony included the Prime Minister, members of the Cabinet, the Leader of the Opposition, senior military officers and civilian officials, officers from the UK and USA, and gunners from across Canada. The Commanding Officers of every artillery unit in Canada paraded together in front of the Memorial immediately prior to its unveiling. The Memorial had stood for 39 years in Major's Hill Park, and was moved in 1997 as part of the National Capital Commission's restructuring plan.

On May 24, 1998, distinguished guests and members of the Artillery family assembled in Green Island Park, Ottawa, to rededicate the National Artillery Memorial. It was rededicated on by the Right Honourable Antionio Lamer P.C, C.D., LL.D, DLL. Chief Justice of Canada. Green Island Park locates the Memorial with the Commonwealth Airforce Memorial across from City Hall, and provides a distinguished and scenic location for this important monument. This memorial honours the "glorious memory of the officers and men of the Royal Regiment of Canada who gave their lives in the service of Canada."

The money for the construction of this stone memorial came from donations from all ranks of The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery at the end of the Second World War, from individuals and from units as rime for construction drew near, and from a grant from the Royal Canadian Artillery Association.

The CANLOAN Memorial is dedicated to Canadian officers who died while serving with the British Army during the Second World War. CANLOAN was a volunteer program through which Canadian officers were loaned to the British Army. 673 Canadian officers volunteered and joined the British in the Second World War. CANLOAN suffered 465 casualties, of which 128 were fatal.

The memorial sits on a circle built of stones imbedded in cement and inside the circle is a star made of polished granite. It was unveiled on June 3, 1961, by the Governor General of Canada, the Right Honourable Georges P. Vanier. It was built through contributions from the governments of Canada and the United Kingdom, British Regiments, CANLOAN Army Officers’ Association and officers’ families.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission installed a Cross of Sacrifice in 1957 in Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa, Ontario. The Cross of Sacrifice, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield in 1918, is one of two iconic features designed by Commonwealth War Graves Commission architects. Crosses of Sacrifice are found around the world in Commission cemeteries and in public cemeteries, such as Beechwood, where there is a concentration of War Dead. There are over 210 War Dead buried in Beechwood Cemetery alongside thousands of Veterans.

The Cross of Sacrifice is an imposing bronze medieval longsword, blade down, on a stark white cross. It is one of the most enduring symbols of the bravery and sacrifice made by the men and women of the Commonwealth during the World Wars. It is located in the centre of the Field of Honour in Section 27 where War Dead and Veterans are buried. In 1958, the Commission installed the Cremation Memorial in a rock garden adjacent to Section 27 where 31 War Dead are commemorated. A ceremony to dedicate the Cross of Sacrifice and Cremation Memorial was held in May 1959.

This Cross of Sacrifice in Beechwood Cemetery is one of 26 installed by the Commission across Canada.

Canada's military community has been burying its members throughout Beechwood Cemetery for more than 100 years. In 2007, Section 27, along with Section 103 and the military plots in Sections 29 and 19 were developed into Canada's National Military Cemetery.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission commemorates 31 War Dead of the First and Second World Wars on the Cremation Memorial at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa, Ontario. The 31 War Dead commemorated on the Memorial were cremated in Canada and the United States and do not have a place of burial.

The Cremation Memorial was built in 1958 and is located in a rock garden adjacent to the Field of Honour in Section 27 where War Dead and Veterans are buried. The Cremation Memorial consists of commemoration panels set on an inside wall of a granite shelter building that was designed and built by Veterans Affairs Canada engineers. The Commission installed a Cross of Sacrifice in the centre of Section 27 in 1957 and a ceremony to dedicate the Cross of Sacrifice and Cremation Memorial was held in May 1959.

As of 1971, the Cremation Memorial has also displayed plaques to commemorate 28 Dutch War Dead whose graves are maintained by the Canadian Agency of the Commission on behalf of the Netherlands.

Canada's military community has been burying its members in Beechwood Cemetery for more than 100 years and it is the resting place of over 210 War Dead and thousands of Veterans. In 2007, Section 27, along with Section 103 and the military plots in Sections 29 and 19 were developed into Canada's National Military Cemetery.
