THE NILE VOYAGEURS 1884 – 85. In 1884 the British Government decided to send a military expedition up the Nile River to relieve Major-General Charles Gordon, who was besieged in Khartoum by Mahdist tribesmen. Appointed to command the relieving force, Viscount Wolseley, who had led the expedition to the Red River in 1870, requested the recruitment of experienced Canadian voyageurs. Almost 400 volunteered, including many superb rivermen, and the largest group came from the Ottawa Valley area. Commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel Frederick C. Denison, they were largely responsible for the successful navigation of the Nile’s difficult cataracts, although sixteen voyageurs died on service. The contingent returned to Canada in 1885. En 1884 le gouvernement britannique décida d’envoyer une expédition militaire au Nil libérer le major-général Charles Gordon qui était assiégé à Khartoum par les Mahdistes. Nommé commandant des troupes de secours, le vicomte Wolseley, qui avait conduit l’expédition de la Rivière Rouge en 1870, demanda qu’on recrute des voyageurs canadiens d’expérience. Près de 400 volontaires se présentèrent, parmi lesquels se trouvaient d’excellents bateliers, dont le plus grand nombre était originaire de la vallée de l’Outaouais. Commandés par le lieutenant-colonel Frederick C. Denison, ils contribuèrent sensiblement au succès de la navigation dans les cataractes périlleuses du Nil. 16 voyageurs moururent pendant l’expédition. Le contingent revint au Canada en 1885. MAJOR EDWARD J.G. HOLLAND, V.C., 1878-1948

Born in Ottawa, Holland enlisted in 1899 in the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles. He served in the Boer War and, on November 7, 1900, was a member of the small rearguard detachment assigned to cover a withdrawal from the Komati River. For his gallant action during this engagement Holland was awarded the Victoria Cross. His citation reads: “Sergeant Holland did splendid work with his Colt (machine) Gun, and kept the Boers off the two 12-pounders by its fire at close range. When he saw the enemy were too near him to escape with the gun-carriage, as the horse was blown, he calmly lifted the gun off and galloped away with it under his arm.”

LE MAJOR EDWARD J.G. HOLLAND, V.C., 1878-1948

Né à Ottawa, Holland s’engagea en 1899 dans le Premier Régiment Canadien des Fusiliers à Cheval. Il servit dans la Guerre des Boers et faisait partie, le 7 novembre 1900, du petit détachement, d’arrière-garde chargé de couvrir le retraite sur la Rivière Komati. Son intrépidité lors de cet engagement lui valut la Victoria Cross. Il fut cité en ces termes : “Le Sergent Holland s’est servit splendidement de sa mitrailleuse ‘Colt’, maintenant les Boers à distance des deux pièces d’artillerie de 12 par un feu nourri à courte portée. Ne pouvant s’échapper avec l’arme et l’affût, son cheval étant épuisé, Holland prit l’arme sous son bras et s’enfuit au gallop”.

COMMISSARIAT BUILDING
1827

This structure, the oldest existing stone building in
Ottawa, was used as a storehouse, office and treasury
during the construction of the Rideau Canal (1826-32)
under the direction of Lieutenant-Colonel John By, R.E.
Its superb masonry and solid construction are typical of
the stonework done by Scottish masons along the Rideau
Canal and, at a later date, on private homes in eastern
Ontario. In 1864, the building was turned over to
the Canadian government and, until 1951, was used
successively by various departments concerned with
the maintenance of the canal.

EDIFICE DE L’INTENDANCE, 1827

Cet édifice, le plus ancien à Ottawa, servit d’entrepôt et de bureau de la trésorerie pendant la construction du canal Rideau (1826-1832) sous le direction du lieutenant-colonel John By, R.E. Son excellente maçonnerie et sa solidité sont caractéristiques du travail accompli à cette époque par les maçons écossais le long du canal Rideau et, plus tard, sur certaines résidences de l’est de l’Ontario. En 1854, les autorités britanniques cédèrent au gouvernement canadien cet édifice qui, jusqu’en 1951, abrita successivement divers organismes chargés d’assurer l’entretien du canal.

Filip Konowal, V.C. 1887-1959. Filip Konowal was born in Kudkiv, Ukraine. After immigrating to Canada in 1913, he became a resident of Ottawa and a parishioner of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Shrine. In July 1915, Filip Konowal joined the 77^th Canadian Infantry Battalion (Governor General’s Foot Guards). On August 21 and 22, 1917, during the Battle of Hill 70 near Lens, France, he single-handedly destroyed three machine gun positions and killed over 16 of the enemy in hand-to-hand combat. After awarding Corporal Konowal with the Victoria Cross, King George V remarked: “Your exploit is one of the most daring and heroic in the history of my army. For this, accept my thanks.”

Cpl Filip Konowal, VC. 47^th Canadian Infantry Battalion. 21 August 1917. Citation. “For most conspicuous bravery and leadership when in charge of a section in attack. His section had the difficult task of mopping-up cellars, craters and machine-gun emplacements. Under his able direction, all resistance was overcome successfully, and heavy casualties inflicted on the enemy. In one cellar, he himself bayonetted three enemy and attacked single-handed seven others in a crater, killing them all. On reaching the objective, a machine-gun was holding up the right flank, causing many casualties. Cpl Konowal rushed forward and entered the emplacement, killed the crew, and brought the gun back to our lines. The next day, he again attacked single-handed another machine-gun emplacement, killed three of the crew, and destroyed the gun and emplacement with explosives. This Non-Commissioned Officer alone killed sixteen of the enemy, and during the two days actual fighting carried on continuously his good work until severely wounded.”
