VIMY OAKS LEGACY TREE
2017

This oak tree is a descendant from the few acorns gathered after the Battle of Vimy Ridge by Canadian soldier Lt. Leslie Miller. Not a single oak tree remained standing in the aftermath of the shelling. This tree, a descendant of one of those acorns, is one of the trees planted across Canada to mark the 100th anniversary of this historic Canadian victory. It stands as a living memorial to all Canadian soldiers who fought in the First World War including the eleven Athens soldiers killed and memorialized on the nearby stone Cairn.

After a sendoff at the Athens train station the soldiers departed for Halifax then sailed to Europe. They found the battlefields of France scarred with huge bomb craters and strewn with the dead and dying. The weather was atrocious and in the trenches the soldiers stood in cold mud and water, in constant fear of mustard or chlorine gas attacks. The smell of death hung in the air. After 4 days the innovative strategy and ferocity of the four Canadian divisions prevailed, marking a pivotal moment in Canada's coming of age as a nation.

After the Battle of Vimy Ridge was won on April 12, 1917, Lieutenant Leslie Miller, a soldier from Ontario, gathered up a handful of acorns as a souvenir to the momentous victory. On returning to Canada, he transplanted the acorns on his land, calling his property the Vimy Oaks Farm. Today several of the oak trees he planted are still standing.

The Vimy Oaks Legacy Corporation repatriated Canadian Vimy Oaks back to Vimy Ridge and saplings were planted as part of the centennial commemorations in 2017 and 2018. Vimy Oaks saplings were offered for sale across the country as a memorial to the soldiers of the First World War.

THE LEGION RIDERS OF SOUTH EASTERN ONTARIO
THE LITTLE PARK WITH A BIG HEART

Authentic
Corn Poppies
from
Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

In 1998, this property was left to the town of Gananoque by Duffy Macully as long as the Gananoque Legion Branch 92 used it for a park. Douglas Wood, 2nd Vice at Branch 92, took on the project even spending his own money to make the park as nice as he could. Douglas was a member of Legion Riders, which consist of United Nations Veterans, and they asked the town if they could be responsible for the park.

In 2011, the park was renamed to Legion Riders Memorial Park and dedicated to all who served - past, present and future. The park has flower beds, benches, a bed of corn poppies from Flanders Fields, a mighty oak seedling from Vimy Ridge and the Canadian Peacekeepers Monument.

The Memorial Gates, made of limestone pillars and iron, honour the 11 Westport men who gave their lives in the First World War. The gates were erected in 1919/20 by the Women's Institute.

A First World War plaque is located on the gates. It was donated by the Women's Institute in 1919 for the cenotaph. In 2020, the Village of Westport was contacted by the National Wall of Remembrance Association who fully restored the plaque on the gates. It was unveiled on November 11, 2021, by the local MP, MPP and Paul Herlehy, the great nephew of Private David A Herlehy, who died in the First World War. The plaque was then rededicated by Chaplain Reverend Thomas Dorward.

John Cherry Boyd, listed on the gates, had a very rough start in life, being placed into care at an orphanage in Scotland in 1897 at the approximate age of four. His father, Sam Boyd, was listed as "whereabouts unknown," and his mother, Isabella Cherry, was convicted of neglecting John. The Sheriff felt the only way to help John was to place him in the orphanage and Isabella signed over her rights to him. John remained in the care of the Quarrier's Home at Bridge of Weir in Scotland until 1905 when he was sent to Canada as a child migrant, more than 100,000 orphaned and destitute children were distributed as Home Children over the course of 63 years.

Veterans’ Memorial Garden began in 2012 with the laying of the first foot stones. The garden includes 45 footstones with the names of men and women who served their country. Carveth Charitable Foundation and Legion Branch 92 purchased all the footstones from Leeder Monuments.

There were three stones placed in the garden of Veterans that lived at Carveth before the Veterans’ garden was built. Their families purchased these stones as they wished to have them placed here. Those names are: Neville Nalon, Godfrey Nalon and Thomas Campbell.

In 2017, the Veterans’ Memorial Garden at Carveth Care Centre expanded with the addition of a monument.  The garden is built into the courtyard of the nursing home. The three foot high memorial stone was constructed by Leeder Monuments. The monument was erected in the garden and dedicated to Canadian Veterans who lived at Carveth Care Centre.
