A life-size statue of Private Arnold Logan in uniform was placed at Lower Muncey (St Paul’s) Cemetery on April 29, 1918, by Lumley & Doan marble dealers. The cemetery is near Arnold's old home at Munsee-Delaware Nation. The statue was placed on the base of the family tombstone which was previously dedicated. Arnold was killed in action on April 26, 1916, while serving with the of the 1st Battalion, Canadian Infantry. The statue was erected in the family plot by members of Arnold’s unit and former Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen co-workers.

Logan was born in 1896 in Munsee-Delaware. He lived with his family in a log cabin (which still stands) until sent to Mt. Elgin Residential School nearby. On September 14, 1914, he became one of the first young men to join the 25th Elgin Regiment and went overseas where he worked on railway-building, engineering and then was assigned to specialized training on the machine gun.

Prior to enlisting, he worked as a fireman on the Pere Marquette railway out of St. Thomas, Ontario. He was very well-liked by fellow railway employees and soldiers.

There were many reasons Indigenous young men joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force, including as an escape from the horrors of residential schools, for a pay cheque and three meals a day, for the opportunity to show themselves as citizens and avoid their official status as mere wards of the Crown, even as a chance to highlight a proud warrior tradition.

Canada came of age during the First World War, but Indigenous soldiers were all but forgotten by the country for which they fought. They were not entitled to land; they had no home territory; they were not awarded Veterans’ benefits unless they renounced their Indigenous status.

In early 1919, a special meeting of the township of Caradoc was called to discuss erecting a memorial to honour those who died in the First World War. A committee was appointed and a contract was awarded to Hamby and son of the Strathroy Marble. It was recommended that a marble tablet be placed in the town hall inscribed with the names of all the men and women who had served.

The Mount Brydges Cenotaph was unveiled on June 15, 1920. It is made of granite and the statue surmounting the pedestal is from Italy. After the Second World War, the names of those fallen were engraved on the back of the cenotaph. In the 2010s, those who fought in the Korean conflict were remembered and in 2016 the cenotaph was restored.

The Mary Armstrong Chapter of the IODE erected a Soldier’s Memorial on August 24, 1924, next to the Strathroy Armoury. It was unveiled by Helen Buchanan whose father, Sergeant Reginald Buchanan, was one of the fallen. The cenotaph was worked on by the Hambly brothers. It consists of three large tablets of imperial grey Canadian granite standing side by side on a light grey base.

On July 31, 1930, a cross of sacrifice and two bronze lamps on either side of the cross were added by the Daughters of the Empire. The unveiling was done by Mrs. S. F. Robinson, of London, wife of the late Rev. Rural Dean Robinson, formerly rector of St. John’s Church, Strathroy. He was the chaplain of the 126th when war was declared. Rev. and Mrs. Robinson gave their three sons for active service, one of whom, Captain Fritz Robinson, was killed at Givenchy in 1915.

In the 1940s, the fallen from the Second World War were engraved on the cenotaph. In 2010, and inscription for the Korean War was engraved on the south face of the cenotaph.

The foreground of the cenotaph was redesigned in 2012 to make room for the laying of wreaths and a raised flower bed. The masonry for the flower bed included limestone carving from the razed armoury.

In 2015, the Strathroy-Caradoc Lions Club installed custom metal signs recognizing the sacrifice of each of the individuals listed on the cenotaph and their respective regiments, to mark the centenary of the First World War.

An inscription for Afghanistan was engraved on the cenotaph on November 5, 2015, and unveiled by Afghanistan Veteran Richard Sauve on Remembrance Day 2015. It was engraved by Strathroy Monuments and paid for by Veterans.

TECUMSEH

[plaque]
TECUMSEH
1768 - 1813

Born in a Shawnee village in what is now Ohio, Tecumseh
became in the 1790s, co-leader with his brother, the
Prophet, of a movement to restore and preserve tradi-
tional Indian values. He believed a union of all the
western tribes to drive back white settlement to be the
one hope for Indian survival and spread this idea the
length of the frontier. Seeing Americans as the im-
mediate threat, he allied himself with the British. In
1812, assisted in the capture of Detroit and was killed
?? ?? near the Battle of the Thames on 5 October
1813, while retreating with General Procter from
Amherstburg.

A small stone monument dedicated to Chief Tecumseh was erected in the early 20th century. In the 1960s, a larger monument and plaque was erected by the Canadian Federal Government. It is made of concrete and stones.

Tecumseh was a Shawnee warrior and chief, and one of the most celebrated First Nation's leaders in history. During the war of 1812, Tecumseh's confederacy helped in the capture of Fort Detroit. He was killed on October 5, 1813 when Unites States Naval Forces took control of Lake Erie.
