Upon learning that 250 light armoured vehicles (LAV III) from the Canadian Afghanistan mission were going to be deactivated, HCol (Ret'd) Tom Jenkins OC, CD suggested to the Prime Minister's Office that they be offered to communities across Canada as monuments commemorating the service of Canadians that served in Afghanistan.

Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) III were originally manufactured by Canadians at General Dynamics Land Systems Canada in London, Ontario and were instrumental to troops in carrying out their missions while in Afghanistan. The monuments were created from decommissioned LAV III hulls, donated by the Government of Canada and built by Militex Coating Inc. and Fanshawe College students in London, Ontario.

On November 5, 2014, the Canada Company Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) lll Monument Program was launched to recognize the 40,000 Canadians Armed Forces who served in Afghanistan and to commemorate the 162 Canadians who lost their lives. The program closed after awarding 33 monuments to communities across Canada.

On Saturday November 11, 2017, the City of Kitchener and the Regimental Council of the Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada dedicated this monument before the Regiment, dignitaries, and Kitchener citizens. This is the third such monument in the Waterloo Region as a result of the work of the Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada Regimental Trust and Council which demonstrates the huge support for their newer Veterans. The project was funded by the City of Kitchener, funds and/or services raised by the Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada Regimental Council, and from individual and corporate sponsors.

On May 24, 1929, the Kitchener Cenotaph was unveiled by Honourable W.D. Ross, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario in memory of those who died in the World War. This replica of the British Empire in Whitehall, London, was designed by architect William H.E. Schmalz of Kitchener. It first stood on a small traffic island on Frederick Street, near King Street and was moved in front of the former City Hall and rededicated on November 11, 1949.

In 1973, the cenotaph was moved to its present location and inscriptions were added to honour those who died in the Second World War and Korean War. The cenotaph was rededicated on June 28, 1973 in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh.

The 19 feet high, nine feet wide and five feet thick granite cenotaph lists some of the greatest battles that Canadians participated in.

In 1980, 32 women became the first female officer cadets at the prestigious, then male-only, Royal Military College of Canada. The idea to present the college with a bronze woman officer cadet statue was initiated in 2018 by the class of 1981. An offer was made to the class of 1984, composed of the 32 women, to collaborate on the design and creation of the statue. It was then jointly gifted by both classes to the Royal Military College in the spring of 2022. The statue commemorates the inclusion of women. Their bravery paved the way for others to follow, and now women are woven into the fabric of the Royal Military College.

The statue, unveiled on May 20, 2022, depicts a standing female cadet in ceremonial dress. Rosemary Breault-Landry, a talented artist from Gatineau, was chosen to create the statue. In preparation, she visited the Royal Military College in late November 2019 and met with female cadets to ensure that the design was a realistic and accurate depiction of their dress and stature. The Female Cadet Statue is a recognition of our past and the progress made towards a progressive, integrated and inclusive Royal Military College of Canada.
