The Hamilton Cenotaph was erected through the efforts of the Canadian Club of Hamilton to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives during the First World War. The plan was proposed by John Stephen, President of the Canadian Club of Hamilton on Thursday, June 23, 1921. He felt the funds required could be raised by all of the Canadian Clubs in Hamilton. Architect William Russell Souter, a partner in the Hutton and Souter architectural firm, was chosen to design the cenotaph.

Constructed during the winter of 1922-23, the cenotaph is a replica of the Westminster Cenotaph in London. It is a granite column with a stone shaped casket resting on top. On either side are two smaller columns, mounted with carved replicas of the equipment used by Canadian troops in the First World War. On the original cenotaph, the only words were, "Our Glorious Dead".

The cenotaph was unveiled at 5:00 p.m. on May 22, 1923 by the Governor General, Viscount Byng of Vimy. Viscount Byng was recognized for leading the Canadians into France and Flanders. Over 5,000 spectators were present to observe the ceremony. The proceedings began with a short speech from A. R. Lancefield, president of the local Canadian Club and concluded by the unveiling with the massed singing of the hymn, Abide With Me. Over 500 bunches of flowers were laid around the monument.

Improvements to the cenotaph included bronze posts linked together by a bronze plated steel chain. The bronze posts house the badges that were issued to Veterans of both World Wars. Other improvements included the addition of shrubbery and flood lighting at night.

The Lost Monument was built in the 1890s to remember British soldiers in pre-Confederation Canada. Located near the ramparts, which date back to the Battle of Stoney Creek, the monument was unveiled on August 8, 1898. The site is not far from the Burlington Heights encampment used by the British during the War of 1812. However, no Veterans of that war appear to be buried at the Lost Monument site.

In 1894, Her Majesty's Army and the Navy Veterans' Society took over the plot. The burial ground for British soldiers who died between 1862 and 1868 was then converted into a burial plot for Veterans of the army and navy.

While the reasons why the monument was forgotten remain a mystery, the structure is in excellent condition, except the lettering is almost indecipherable. The monument is now part of Her Majesty's Army and the Navy Veterans' Society's annual Decoration Day program.

The Hamilton Cross of Sacrifice was constructed in 1923 in memory of First World War Veterans. During the Decoration Day services on August 23, 1923, two memorial crosses were unveiled as part of the ceremonies. More than 8,000 soldiers marched in a parade through the city streets and into Harvey Park where the service was being held. Thousands of residents lined the streets watching the parade, and an estimated 20,000 people were present in the park itself. The bands, which were all together in the park, played hymns such as: Abide with Me, Unto the Hills, and Onward, Christian Soldiers.

The Cross of Sacrifice was paid for by the Imperial War Graves Commission to honour the war dead. The second cross was funded by the Canadian Patriotic Fund in memory of the 214 wives, mothers, and children whose loved ones died while fighting overseas. Once the formal ceremonies were completed, truck loads of flowers that had followed the parade were unloaded and many people placed them on the memorials and on graves in the cemetery.

The Cross of Sacrifice, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield in 1918, is one of two iconic features designed by Commonwealth War Graves Commission architects. Crosses of Sacrifice are found around the world in Commission cemeteries and in public cemeteries. The Cross of Sacrifice is an imposing bronze medieval longsword, blade down, on a stark white cross. It is one of the most enduring symbols of the bravery and sacrifice made by the men and women of the Commonwealth during the World Wars

The Museum’s de Havilland DHC-5 Buffalo was completed at Downsview, Ontario in May 1978 and was one of four aircraft built for the Sudanese Air Force. The Museum received the airframe from DAC International in January 2003. The aircraft has been restored as Canadian Armed Forces DHC-5, #115461. “461” was flying under United Nations colours in the Middle East on August 9, 1974, when it was shot down over Syria killing all nine Canadian servicemen on board. The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum's Buffalo was dedicated in August 2009 to the thousands of Canadian military personnel who have served as United Nations Peace Keepers. There are display boards inside the aircraft that the public are permitted to go inside and see.

In late 1973, Canadian Forces took part in the Second United Nations Emergency Force, to supervise the ceasefire between Egyptian and Israeli forces. Included in Canada's commitment to the mission were two Canadian Forces Buffalo aircrafts and crew. The unit was stationed in Ismailia, Egypt, a small city next to the Suez Canal.

The single highest loss of Canadian lives since Canada began to participate in international peace missions involved their presence in Syria. Nine Canadian Armed Forces members with the United Nations peace mission in Egypt were killed on August 9, 1974, when their Buffalo aircraft 115461 was shot down in a Syrian missile attack while making a routine supply run to the mission in the Golan Heights. For this reason, August 9 has been declared National Peacekeepers' Day in Canada.

St. Paul's Presbyterian Church was the Regimental Church of the 91st Canadian Highlanders from 1903 – 1931. The Cross of Sacrifice, unveiled in 1921, commemorates the First World War fallen of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church.

The large Celtic Cross was carved in Edinburgh, Scotland, and is similar to the ancient crosses in Iona where Christianity was first brought to Scotland from Ireland by St. Columba. The arms of the Cross are shortened, the column tapers from its base to the top and a sword pointing downward is in the center. A circle symbolical of a crown or wreath surrounds the arms.

After the Second World War, names of the congregation's fallen from that war were added.
