ELLIS WELLWOOD SIFTON. V.C.
1891 - 1917

Born and educated in Wallacetown, Sifton joined the 18th
Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, in October 1914.
During the Canadian attack on Vimy Ridge on April 9, 1917,
his company was held up by the fire of a German machine gun.
Lance-Sergeant Sifton charged it single handed, killed the crew
and held the position against enemy counter attack until his
comrades arrived. In carrying out his gallant act, he was
killed, but his conspicuous valour undoubtedly saved many
lives and contributed largely to the success of the operation.
The British Empire’s highest award for military valour, the
Victoria Cross, was awarded posthumously to Ellis Sifton.

DR. CHARLES DUCOMBE
1791-1867

This house was built in 1848 by Dr. Elijah Duncombe, brother
of Dr. Charles Duncombe. The latter, born in Connecticut,
came to Upper Canada in 1819 and settled on this property
shortly thereafter. In 1824, with Dr. John Rolph, he opened
at St. Thomas the province's first medical school, named
"The Talbot Dispensatory" in honour of Col. Thomas Talbot.
Charles Duncombe later moved to Burford township and in
1830 was elected to the legislature as a Reform member
for Oxford. An ardent supporter of William Lyon Mackenzie,
he raised an insurgent force during the Rebellion of 1837
which was dispersed by loyal militia. Duncombe then fled
to the United States where he remained until his death.

The statue, created by J.G. Tickell & Sons Bronze Founders in Toronto, was brought to St. Thomas in 1922 to remember those who had fought in the First World War. It was erected outside the old hospital on Pearl Street and later moved to the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital in the early 1980s, where it stood near the parking lot. It was moved to this site to complete the garden which officially opened on October 28, 2017.

The Aylmer Cenotaph was erected and dedicated on November 25, 1928. The design, by James Hutchinson and Peckham, weighed 15 tons and was constructed from two pieces of granite purchased from the Cleveland Stone Company and shipped by the Michigan Central Railroad to Aylmer. A special derrick was brought in to handle the installation.

The dedication ceremony, for some unknown reason, did not take place on the 11th of November as planned. It occurred two weeks later with a guard of honour provided by the Elgin Regiment under the command of Capt. E.W. Haines. The procession, led by the regiment and its band, included the St. Thomas Legion Pipe Band and the Aylmer Citizen's Band. The King's colours were carried by Lt. Ross McPherson and the Regimental colours by Lt. Balkwill. A memorial guard was mounted with arms reversed. Records indicate that over 2,000 people witnessed the event.

The bronze statue of a weeping woman adorns the war memorial; one hand is at her downcast face, while the other holds a wreath. On either side of her, etched into the stone, are the names of fifty-five men from Aylmer and Malahide Township who were killed during the First World War.

A copper plate was added at the bottom of the memorial shortly after the end of the Second World War listing the names of the 26 area men who died. Later, the plaque was removed and the names of the men permanently inscribed on the cenotaph. Recently, the words "Korean War 1950-1953" have been added.

SOUTHWOLD WAR VETERANS' MEMORIAL

The Memorial Site is designed to be a simple, dignified place of solitude where
members of the community and visitors may enjoy a quiet moment of reflection on
the heritage of Southwold Township.

Its geometry is ?? by a concrete circle, symbolic of those who "joined together"
in the common cause of defending democracy and freedom.

Two great stones, one for each World War, represent the "roots" of the township and
firm resolve of the young people who left their homes, families and community to
face the uncertainty of impending conflict. These stones were drawn from the ??
of area farms near Talbotville and ??.

A bronze sundial stands between the stones. It represents "remembering for all time"
those form our community who served and who gave their lives for their country.

A bronze plaque identifies the honoured veterans who lost their lives in World I
and World War II.

This memorial was designed and constructed by community volunteers in
partnership with the Rosy Rhubarb Committee and the Municipality of Southwold.
Funding was provided by donations from citizens, businesses, community
organizations and the Province Of Ontario.

# 4 BOOMBING & GUNNERY SCHOOL
FINGAL

this facility, located west of Fingal, trained non-pilot air
crew from November ?? 1940 to February 17, 1945.
Over ??personnel graduated and were sent to theatres
of war throughout the world.

In tribute to # 4 B&G this memorial site included a 1/4
scale silhouette of a Lysander aircraft. The Lysander was
typical of the aircraft used to pull "drogues" or targets for
practice by flyers and gunners. Three Lysanders crashed
near Fingal during training flights, killing their crews.
