Memorial Hospital was built in 1923-1924, when the City of St. Thomas required expanded hospital services following the First World War. It was located at 43-45 Pearl Street and officially opened on November 19, 1924. During the opening of the hospital the Statue of a Canadian Soldier was unveiled by Brigadier General W.B. King, C.M.G., D.S.O.; Central Window in Memorial Hall was unveiled by Arthur Barons, Warden of Elgin; Nursing Sister Window was unveiled by Rev. Monseigneur West; Victorious Canadian Soldier Window was unveiled by Frank A. Lemon and Memorial Tablets were unveiled by Captain J.D. Curtis, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Nursing education in the city continued under the auspices of the new hospital, under the name Memorial Hospital Training School for Nurses. A further expansion of hospital services was required following the Second World War and the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital was constructed and opened on May 11, 1954. Memorial Hospital continued to operate, as a chronic care unit of the new hospital and was used for a time as a chronic care facility. Memorial Hospital closed in 1990 and was leveled in 1998.

Kingsmill-Mapleton Women's Institute donated a wheelchair to Memorial Hospital on Pearl Street honouring the memory of five young men who gave their lives in the Second World War. It was presented in a special ceremony held February 14 , 1951, with more than 50 women gathered. Taking part in the ceremony were Rev. William Fermer, Mrs. John Donald, president of the group and Mrs. Kenneth McNeil, who gave the presentation address.

A bronze plate was inscribed with Kingsmill and Mapleton Women's Institute and names of the five heroes - Donald Finch, and J. Barry Cleaver, members of the Royal Canadian Air Force; Glen Durdle, Archie T. Fisher and Leon Williams, members of the Canadian Army.

Memorial Hospital closed in 1990 and was leveled in 1998. It is not known what happened to the wheelchair and plaque.

RCAF TECHNICAL TRAINING SCHOOL

The only facility of its kind in Ontario during the Second World War, No. 1 Technical Training School, St. Thomas was established by the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939 to produce skilled ground crews for active wartime service. It was housed here in the Ontario Hospital complex and was operated in compliance with Canada's commitment to establish air training facilities in sites removed from the theatre of war. Equipped to handle more than 2,000 students at a time, the school offered six-month courses for aircraft electricians and aero engine, airframe and instrument mechanics in addition to specialized training for fabric and sheet metal workers. When the war ended in 1945 the school was closed and the complex was returned to the Ontario Department of Health.
