The War Memorial Library at 269 Queen Street was erected as a memorial to those from the area who served in the First World War and officially opened on May 24, 1935. Lieutenant Governor Herbert A. Bruce and Major-General James MacBrien, both former residents of Scugog Township, presided over the ceremonies. A Book of Remembrance was placed in the library as a memorial to the fallen soldiers of the Great War.

In need of expansion, the library building committee located a site at 231 Water Street and the Scugog Memorial Public Library opened to the public on May 29, 1982. The War Memorial Library on Queen Street was renovated and converted into office space in 2019.

The Highway of Heroes Durham LAV lll Monument was dedicated on August 19, 2016 and pays special tribute to the service of the local Ontario Regiment and other Durham residents who served in Afghanistan (2001-2014) and especially Trooper Darryl James Caswell, who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Light Armoured Vehicles (LAV) III were originally manufactured by Canadians at General Dynamics Land Systems Canada in London, Ontario and were instrumental to troops in carrying out their missions while in Afghanistan. The monuments were created from decommissioned LAV III hulls, donated by the Government of Canada and built by Militex Coating Inc. and Fanshawe College students in London, Ontario.

On November 5, 2014, the Canada Company Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) lll Monument Program was launched to recognize the 40,000 Canadians Armed Forces who served in Afghanistan and to commemorate the 162 Canadians who lost their lives. The program closed after awarding 33 monuments to communities across Canada.

HISTORIC BOWMANVILLE
Bowmanville's First Volunteers, W.W.I

When war was declared by Great Britain in
1914, recruitment of Canadian troops soon
followed. This mural depicts the ceremony as
the town's first volunteers marched off with great
pride to board the trains for Halifax. The 136th
Battalion spent the summer of 1916 training at
Camp Hoskins along Bowmanville Creek. At
such places as Ypres, The Somme and Vimy,
Canadians earned a reputation for bravery. By
war's end, on Nov. 11th, 1918, sixty-three local
men had made the supreme sacrifice.
Following the Great War Branch 178 of the
Royal Canadian Legion was founded. Since its
inception it has been active in veterans' affairs &
community projects. The Legion pipe band
continues to be a reminder of Bowmanville's
military heritage.

This mural was made possible by the
Municipality of Clarington.

The Tyrone War Monument was constructed in 1949 in memory of Tyrone men who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. The two separate posts represent one for each World War, and hold brass plaques inscribed with the names of those fallen. The posts are composed of bricks, with a cement top, and are 50 inches high, 36 inches wide, and 18 inches thick. The monument was erected by the Tyrone Community Centre, and the plaques were supplied by the quilting club, Club 49.
