Beginning in the late 1980’s and championed by City Councillor and veteran Bill Struck, the City of Cambridge established a street naming policy asking developers to select 50 per cent of the names for their new streets from the Veterans List maintained by the Cambridge Archives and Records Centre. Further research in 2002 by local historian Gerry Love and aided by Nancy Morrey added more names to the list. The Vet’s list now has more than 5,000 veterans and there are over 130 "Poppy Streets" in the city. The Vet's list includes veterans of the First World War, Second World War and Korea. Gerry Love heard that Nancy wrote war poetry and had an interest in military history. Upon their meeting Gerry told her that he was researching the backgrounds of the veterans who had poppy streets named after them.

"Wall of Remembrance"

In Flanders Fields

  • In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
  • We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.
  •
  •
  • Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.
    John McCrae

In 1920, the Robert McCausland Studios of Toronto installed the memorial stained glass window in the west corner of the church’s sanctuary to commemorate congregation members killed in the First World War. In 1954, an additional panel was added to the window to commemorate those members who died during the Second World War.

On September 29, 2019, the window was re-dedicated after a one year journey to restore the window to its former glory. The panes were reassembled and installed by Sunrise Stain Glass out of London, Ontario.

On Sunday Sept 18, 2016, the City of Cambridge, in partnership with The Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada Regimental Trust, dedicated a LAV III Monument to commemorate the Afghanistan service of those from the City of Cambridge and the Region of Waterloo.

Light Armoured Vehicles (LAV) III were originally manufactured by Canadians at General Dynamics Land Systems Canada in London, Ontario and were instrumental to troops in carrying out their missions while in Afghanistan. The monuments were created from decommissioned LAV III hulls, donated by the Government of Canada and built by Militex Coating Inc. and Fanshawe College students in London, Ontario.

On November 5, 2014, the Canada Company Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) lll Monument Program was launched to recognize the 40,000 Canadians Armed Forces who served in Afghanistan and to commemorate the 162 Canadians who lost their lives. The program closed after awarding 33 monuments to communities across Canada.

This is the first such monument in Ontario and the second in Canada. It was funded by the City of Cambridge, individual donations and corporate sponsors who provided materials, man power and service in kind.

This memorial recalls a historic injustice Canadians should pause to remember, as we recall the First World War and the valour of all those Canadian men, and some women, who served. It is a tribute to mark the memory of the thousands of "enemy aliens" who had their civil rights stripped, and were subsequently imprisoned during Canada's first national internment operations of 1914-1920, following the implementation of the War Measures Act. 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the War Measures Act - adopted on August 22, 1914 during the First World War. It was used to imprison Ukrainian-Canadians, and other ethnic groups, including German, Hungarian, Serbian, Croatian, and Armenian communities, into one of Canada's 24 internment camps.

Dr. Lubomyr Luciuk, a professor at the Royal Military College of Canada and former chair of the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association (UCCLA), had taken it upon himself to lead the way and organize the memorial. In the CTO ("One Hundred") project, 100 aluminum plaques were simultaneously unveiled at 100 different locations across the country at 11:00am local time on August 22, 2014. The first plaque was unveiled in Amherst, Nova Scotia, followed by a wave of plaque unveilings moved west, from province to province, culminating in Nanaimo, British Columbia. The plaques, which cost $1,000 to make, were funded by the generosity of the Endowment Council of the Canadian First World War Interment Recognition Fund.

Each plaque features a photo of internment prisoners confined behind a wire fence at the Castle Mountain Internment Camp in Banff, Alberta. The Castle Camp, which was built in 1915 at the base of Castle Mountain, was a Canadian internment camp which held immigrant prisoners of Ukrainian, Austrian, Hungarian, and German descent.

Cambridge Memorial Hospital traces its roots to 1888, then known as Galt Hospital. In 1953, a facility was built in its present location which was named South Waterloo Memorial Hospital, in honour of those who gave their lives for the community and country. As local boundaries changed and communities merged to become the City of Cambridge, the hospital adopted the new name Cambridge Memorial Hospital.

The hospital offers acute care services such as surgery, emergency care, birthing, women and children's care, medical care, intensive care, mental health care, full diagnostic services and laboratory services.

The Portraits of Honour mural is dedicated to the memory of the 158 Canadian soldiers, sailors and aircrew that lost their lives serving in Afghanistan. The mural was created by Cambridge Kinsman and artist Dave Sopha. It took over 6,500 hours to paint.

Once completed, the mural was toured across Canada starting on May 28, 2011 in Kitchener, Ontario, and the last stop was on December 10, 2011, in Cambridge, Ontario. The mural traveled 47,000 kms, paying respect to Canada’s 158 fallen soldiers, sailors, and aircrew from 120 different locations across the country. The mural was also displayed at the Juno Beach Centre in France from September 21 to October 13, 2013.

Sculpted by Wren Frances Gage (1924-2017), the Jenny Wren statue was given to the city of Galt in October 1972 by Veterans of the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service. “Jenny Wren” or just “Jenny” was naval slang used in both the Royal Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy to refer to female sailors, mainly during the Second World War. It is suspected this term originated from the English reference to individual wrens (the bird) as “Jenny Wren”.  The memorial honours more than 6,000 women who completed a three-week basic training in Galt during the Second World War. The Galt facility, HMCS Conestoga, was established for the duration of hostilities on 31 July 1942. In June 1943, Lieutenant-Commander Isabel Macneill became commanding officers of HMCS Conestoga.

The model for the ‘Wrens’, as they were affectionately known, was based on the Women’s Royal Naval Service in Britain, from which they had inherited the nickname. The goal was for women to take over crucial, non-combat roles to free up men for the fighting. The establishment of the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service was the first time that women served in the Canadian Navy in any capacity other than nursing. While no Wren served in a combat role, or even at sea, by the end of the war Wrens worked in 49 naval trades and had earned an international reputation for conscientious efficiency. Unlike the Women’s Royal Naval Service, Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service officers were the first women in the Empire and Commonwealth to carry the King’s Commission in naval service, holding the same ranks and entitled to the same salutes and marks of respect as male officers.

HMCS Conestoga was located in the former Grandview School for Girls, a detention centre for ‘wayward’ girls in Galt. That past quickly became a running joke, but the facility, with existing residences, teaching space, an administration building, and cafeteria, was perfectly suited to its new purpose, and the Wrens quickly made it their home. Basic training at Conestoga lasted three weeks, after which the women would move on to specialist training at other facilities.

The original plan had called for 2,850 Wrens to be enlisted, but by 1945 more than 6,500 women had signed up. HMCS Conestoga was paid off on 31 March 1945, and the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service was disbanded in August 1946.

SGT. FREDERICK HOBSON, V.C.
1873 – 1917

An Englishman, Frederick Hobson immigrated to Canada in
1904 after serving in the South African War. Eight years
later, he moved to Galt (now Cambridge) with his family.
When war broke out in 1914, he joined the Norfolk Rifles
then enlisted with the 20th Battalion of the Canadian
Expeditionary Force. He was awarded a posthumous Victoria
Cross for his heroic action at Hill 70 near Lens, France on
August 18, 1917. During an intense German counter attack,
Hobson rushed from his trench, reactivated a buried Lewis
gun, and engaged the advancing enemy single-handed. When
the gun jammed, the wounded Hobson fought with bayonet
and rifle until he was shot. In the time gained reinforcements
approached to drive the enemy back.
