This plaque is located in the St. George Community Memorial Hall and commemorates those from the St. George and South Dumfries area who served in the Second World War and in Korea.  It was unveiled and dedicated on Canada Day, July 1, 2006 and lists over 245 names.  It is part of the South Dumfries Historical Society’s Memorial Plaque Project which involved the restoration of the plaque from 1925 for those from the area who served in the First World War. This plaque was commissioned by the South Dumfries Historical Society and placed on the front wall of the St. George Community Memorial Hall (see Veteran Affairs Canada Memorial # 35007-001).  It was unveiled by Claude Grandine and his wife Muriel Grandine (Hammond) both Second World War Veteran’s who are named on the plaque. The day also included Honour Guards from the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry and a parade of Veterans with the Argyle and Sutherlands of Hamilton Pipe and Drum. The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum provided a fly over by a Harvard Trainer.

In 1924 the building was purchased by Louise Kitchen with the purpose of donating the building to the community to honour the service of the local citizens who served in the First World War. The idea was that rather than being a granite monument, it would be a living memorial to those who served. With support of the community the building was remodeled into a community hall.

On the August 20, 1925 the Hon. Harry Cockshutt, Lieut-Governor of Ontario (1921-1927) dedicated the building as a “Memorial to those who fought in the Great War.”  At the same time a bronze template acknowledging this dedication with the names of those from the area who served was unveiled with the following inscription:

“This building was presented in memory of Salem Griswold Kitchen by his wife and was remodeled by the citizens as a Memorial to the Soldiers who fought the Great War.”

The building was then placed into the hands of a board of trustees of which the longest serving trustee was the Hon. Harry Nixon (MPP 1919-1961 - Premier of Ontario 1943).

St. George Memorial Hall is also one of the oldest First World War memorials in Ontario and the oldest in the Brant county area. Presently the building is in the care of the South Dumfries Historical Society and houses the St. George and Area Museum and Archives.  It is also used by numerous community groups.

Veterans’ Memorial - Conflict, was designed by Toronto artist, Kari Myllymaki, and unveiled on 11 November 1983. The memorial was dedicated by Reverend Bob Nicholson, Padre for Royal Canadian Legion Branch 15. It was erected by Meadowvale Cemetery as a feature in the Veterans Section which was dedicated the year prior.

Non-representational in its carefully planned setting it conveys respect for Veterans, without glorifying war. The pyramid shapes are constructed of steeled Stanstead granite and surround a polished globe of Barre gray granite. In the center, the globe is the Earth, in danger of being overwhelmed by sinister powers willing to destroy it. The circularity is reflected in the road which surrounds the area. As one walks around the sculpture, the varying heights of the triangular sections give changing views suggesting an elusive ideal.
