The Great War Veterans Association was formed in 1920 for the purpose of  constructing a Cranbrook and District War Memorial. On July 16, 1920, a city-wide canvas was conducted to raise funds. In February of 1921, the memorial committee turned over the funds to the City. By September, 1921, the City Council and the Great War Veterans' Association had agreed upon a plan for a war monument.

By mid-month, Mr. R.C. Eakin, superintendent of the city light plant, ordered a stone memorial monument out of Calgary, Alberta. The cost was to be approximately $1,800, of which two-thirds had already been raised by public subscription. At the Council meeting it was approved that the monument be placed on the Great War Veterans Association grounds which adjoined the Great War Veterans Association building (currently the Byng Hotel).

The cenotaph was unveiled April 9, 1922 on the fifth anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Initially the Cenotaph was installed just alongside the Great War Veteran’s Association Hall, a few meters away from Baker Street. In 1926, the cenotaph was moved from its original location and placed in a small park at the East end of Baker Street, in front of the Government building of the time. In 1969, during the construction of the Cranbrook Mall, the cenotaph was moved again, this time to its present location in Rotary Park next to City Hall.

Constructed in 1990, in memory of people who served in various conflicts (Boer War, First and Second World Wars, Korean Conflict, Vietnam War and Peace Keeping). Originally, the plan for the standing Wall of Honour was 11 feet tall and 26 feet long, but it had to be extended to 12 feet and the original picture reduced to half the size due to the influx of names.

It is located in Rotary Park near the Cranbrook Cenotaph. The engraved marble slabs are 9 feet by 24 feet and can be inset into the concrete wall. The monument contains all the names of Cranbrook and area people who have served in the various conflicts which Canada has fought in. The names are sand blasted in marble to preserve them for future generations. It was unveiled in November 11, 1990, to a crowd of approximately 500 people who came out to the Remembrance Day ceremonies. The memorial, honouring the people of Cranbrook who contributed to Canada's past war efforts, was uncovered following the city's commemoration at the Cenotaph in Rotary Park.

In blessing the wall, Father Yaroslav Dowbush, of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Cranbrook, said the wall should act as reminder of the people who paid the price so Canadians could live in peace and freedom. "Lord, protect this country and protect men and women in the Persian Gulf that they may come back in safety," he said referring to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. "Protect this North American continent and especially British Columbia and Cranbrook."

Representing the City of Cranbrook, acting Mayor Alan Gordon thanked all those who made the Wall of Honour a reality. "Our commitment to the people whose names are etched on this wall is that our community will house your Wall of Honour - with honour - and that we will write in stone lest we forget". There were also letters read from the Minister of Defence and from British Columbia Premier Vander Zalm.

The effort to build the Wall of Honour was a job led by the Cranbrook Firefighter Association in cooperation with the Cranbrook Royal Canadian Legion. Dave Stefanuk and Jack Walkley were singled out for their outstanding work on the project. Veteran's Wall of Honour built by Cranbrook Fire Fighters Dave Stefanuk - Chairman Jack Walkley - President Wally Tymchyna - Chairman D. Haley G. Haley R. McBurney E. Swanson G. Ratcliffe R. Olson D. Nelligan M. English W. Matthews O. Hansen W. Erickson L. Lode G. Evans R. Meeks D. Gordon K. Ferner A. Gordon C. Murrel R. Sauve D. Whieldon L. Becker D. King Also attending the ceremonies were Secretary Treasurer, B.C. Firefighters Association, Randy Wosley; Vice President, International Association of Firefighters North America, Terry Richie; Deputy Zone Commander Ron LeNeveu; and President, B.C. Firefighters Association, Terry Erskine.

A mural depicting Canadian bravery in war and peacekeeping was painted by Joseph Cross on the back of the Cranbrook, B.C. Wall of Honour, near the Rotary Park cenotaph. It was dedicated in May to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the Second World War victory in Europe. Facing it, is an information plaque which touches on military endeavours in the last century. In addition to the monument at its head office in Toronto, the Canadian Bank of Commerce honoured employees from each branch who served in the First World War. This plaque was commissioned shortly after the war and dedicated to the bank's 1701 employees who served in the war, 321 laid down their lives. The names of five employees of the Revelstoke Canadian Bank of Commerce who served in the war are listed on the plaque.

The plaque features the caduceus logo of the bank - two snakes winding around a winged staff at the upper left, and two poppies intertwined with a symbolic olive branch at the lower right. The Canadian Bank of Commerce went to great lengths to commemorate its staff that served in the war including a two-volume book of staff profiles and accounts of their war experiences.
