This is one of four existing railway bridges on the old Kettle Valley Railway, now Trans Canada Trail, that were converted from railway bridges to pedestrian/biking friendly crossings for the trail. The crossings were completed by the Canadian Military Engineers, assisted by the Royal Engineers on two of the crossings from 2002 to 2004.

The bridges were named Canadian Railway Troops Crossing after the First World War Canadian Railway Troops who were part of the Canadian Engineers.

The location of the four crossings are: Cascade, Grand Forks (first crossing completed, southwest of Cacade Falls), Grand Forks (trail at end of Nagraeff or Popoff Roads), and Grand Forks (near Kettle River Drive and 13th Street).

The Castlegar Legion Military Mural was created in 2021 by West Kootenay mural artist Tyler Toews of Canadian Murals. The design features a cross intertwined with a white ribbon and poppies. There is representation from all three branches of the Canadian Forces - a military helmet sits atop the cross, while military boots sit at its base; a sailor's cap sits along the ribbon and a Royal Canadian Air Force cap rests above an image.

The legion’s Ways and Means Officer Bev Storvold first suggested the idea of mural, but it took several years to come to fruition. Storvold didn’t give up and a Columbia Basin Trust grant was secured for the project. The organizers included Legion Vice President Dean Burdeyny, Ways and Means Officer Bev Storvold and President Chris McBain.

This cenotaph was first dedicated by the Rossland Branch of the Great War Veterans’ Association of Canada on November 11, 1921, to those who fought in the Great War. It was erected by funds from the commissions of the Victory Bond Campaign Committee, along with help from the City of Rossland. After the Dominion War Department gave Rossland captured German trophies, the memorial was further developed in the spring.

On July 1, 1997, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 14 rededicated the memorial to those who fought in the Second World War and the Korean War by adding plaques. Those who served during the Boer War were commemorated on the cenotaph with the Legion adding a plaque on September 9, 2000.

The Peace and Remembrance Mural is located next to the memorial.

This mural was started by the Rossland Council for Arts and Culture Public Arts Committee for the 75th D-Day Anniversary. Funding was received from the CBT Public Arts Fund, Nelson District Credit Union Rossland Branch, and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 14.

The mural was painted on 4'x8' panels by local artist Tyler Toews and mounted on the outside wall of the J. Van der Ham building near the cenotaph. It depicts wildflowers of the West Kootenay region, symbolizing Canada's commitment to peace and also commemorating the locals who served during the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. The mural was completed in time for the 2019 Remembrance Day Service.
