There was a war on, that’s the only reason why I wanted to sign up because I wanted to do my part too. At my seventh attempt, I was accepted for the Navy, Royal Navy. Interviewer: Seven attempts?! Seven attempts, yes. They wanted me to go to Canada to join the Canadian Navy and I was only making $3.50 a week. A whole week, $3.50, surely that wouldn’t get me out of St. John’s, let alone to Halifax, that’s where I’d have to go to join up.

Before Newfoundland was a part of Canada Mr. Rogers tried hard to get into the navy and never gave up.

Eli Rogers

Eli Rogers was born in Newfoundland on February 16, 1919. The son of a locomotive engineer he enlisted with the Navy when he was 21 years old. Mr. Rogers served on many ships in the Navy with the Royal Navy Rescue unit.
