Millions of lice... which were killing you.
You had to go and clean your gall darn shirt,
kill all the lice before you could sleep.
You understand? That was lice.
They were so bad, they give you a clean,
a bunch of clean, supposed to be clean
clothes after you had your bath,
they went and gave you a bath and they
gave you clean clothes and the gall darn
lice was so hungry that they, you had to
go and what you call to read your shirt.
Reading your shirt was killing
all the gall darn little things
you know, before you could sleep.
Description
Mr. Lapenskie describes the difficulty of eradicating lice from the seams of his uniform.
Peter Lapenskie
Peter Lapenskie was born on January 31, 1896 in Rockingham, Ontario. His first wartime role was as an interpreter to Polish nationals being held at an internment camp at Kapuskasing, Ontario. Mr. Lapenskie then enlisted in Montreal, went overseas and served in France with the 1st Battalion in the Royal Montreal Regiment, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Mr. Lapenskie was wounded, recovered and served in the Army of Occupation in Cologne, Germany.
