On operation 11/03/1945 the crew of Lancaster mk.BX KB 853 took off at 11.42 from Croft on a daylight raid to bomb Essen. It was observed to plummet to the ground in the target area.
P/O Bishop was posted to 431 Sqn in August 1944 and completed a number of operations as mid-under gunner on Halifax MKIIIs. He also flew as a rear gunner with various crews including W/C Mitchell, predecessor of W/C R. F. Davenport, who recommended him for the Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM) on December 12, 1944. W/C Davenport made a second recommendation on February 24, 1945 for a Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), this award was issued on May 10, 1945. The citation reads:

"As Rear Gunner, this NCO has a quiet efficient manner, which has been a source of great confidence to his crew. Sergeant Bishop has completed twenty-two successful sorties over France & Germany, and possesses the ability to make instant decisions in an emergency, combined with a strong sense of duty and personal courage. He has completely justified the faith which his comrades placed in his vigilance during their long, hazardous flights"
Hubert came from a close family who attended the Salvation Army. He was survived by his wife, Rose, of Glace Bay, N.S., his parents, and siblings William, Charles, Laura, Bert, Johnny & Rachel.
