Location:

From the centre of Dieppe take the Avenue Gambetta and Avenue des Canadiens. Head along the N27 out of Dieppe in the direction of Rouen until the first roundabout where there is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission sign. Go across the roundabout and continue until you reach a second roundabout. Take the first turning right where there is another CWGC sign. Continue until Chemin des Jonquilles, a road on the left. The Dieppe Canadian War Cemetery is on the right of this road and is clearly visible.

  • Photo of Robert Marshall Smith– Smith, Robert Marshall - Flying Officer. Born 8th July, 1916, at Saskatoon, Sask. Educated at Kelvin High School, Winnipeg. Entered the service of the Bank 30th October, 1933. Served at Winnipeg and Toronto city branches, and at Princess & Bagot (Kingston). Enlisted 22nd August, 1942, from Market (Toronto) in R.C.A.F. Flying Officer in July, 1944. Trained at Toronto, Centralia, Oshawa and Camp Borden, Ont. Overseas in October, 1943. Completed 24 operational flights over enemy territory. Awarded posthumously R.C.A.F. Operational Wing. Posthumously MENTIONED IN DESPATCHES King's Birthday Honours, London Gazette, 13th June, 1946. Killed in action in France 7th January, 1945.  His Navigator wrote: "It was a characteristic act, as always throughout our flying his main thought was for the safety of others. He twice saved the lives of the crew."  Flying Officer Smith was an outstanding tennis player, having won championships in both Winnipeg and Toronto.  He was a son of Mr. J. B. Smith, formerly Manager of the Securities Department of the Bank, Toronto branch. From a memorial booklet prepared by the Canadian Bank of Commerce.
