Son of Harold Brown Metcalf and Ellen Riley of Victoria, British Columbia.
During the night of 24 April 1940, three ships struck air mines off the Thames estuary, including the Stokesley, which was sailing from Antwerp, Belgium, to London, England. Fifteen sailors lost their lives.
