Son of Roderick and Isabella Maclean, of Clifton Lodge, Inverness, Scotland. Brother of Captain Norman Macleod MacLean, who died on August 8, 1918, while serving with the Canadian Infantry (Quebec Regiment) and Private Alexander James Maclean, who died on September 26, 1915, while serving with the Cameron Highlanders.
