After hearing about a program inviting Canadian students to become guides at Juno Beach Centre, she quickly jumped at the chance to do so, as she has just obtained her bachelor’s degree and will continue her university studies in education in September.

I can’t imagine this beautiful place ravaged by bombs and grenades.

Véronic set foot in France for the very first time on February 1 and is currently a guide at Juno Beach Centre. “To come here and discover where my ancestors lived and what my great-grandfather and his fellow Canadians had to face in the Second World War is very special,” she said. “I can’t imagine this beautiful place ravaged by bombs and grenades.”

As a future teacher, she particularly appreciates the opportunity to work with children and to give bunker tours to school groups. She is very moved when she thinks of the young men her age who gave so much and fought for peace. She is grateful for the sacrifices they made and admires their courage, perseverance and hope.

It’s through the past that we can learn our mistakes and never repeat them again.

“Here, at the Juno Beach Centre, we are talking about the Canadians who have come together to put an end to this atrocity, and I am proud to be able to tell you this moving story that is sadly full of losses, but which allowed many people to smile again.”

Véronic Beaudry is one of our Faces of Freedom for the 75^th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. “It’s through the past that we can learn our mistakes and never repeat them again,” she wisely concluded.
