100 days: Bourlon (CAF)

Here, just west of Bourlon, the largest artillery barrage of the First World War began on September 27th (1918).The Canadians caught the enemy by surprise. They crossed the Canal du Nord by mid-day and attained the high ground of Bourlon Wood by evening. The Town of Bourlon was completely destroyed and after the war was awarded the Croix de Guerre for courage in the face of hardship and enemy domination. These five days of the Great War are an important part of our local identity. It is an event we teach our children; an event we commemorate each year to honour those who fought to liberate us and to commit ourselves to the values they sacrificed to defend. Thank you Canada.
