Mons is a very important city in the hearts of Commonwealth soldiers. It was Mons where the Commonwealth first entered battle and unfortunately suffered its first loss. And it was at Mons where their last casualty fell, specifically, the Canadian soldier Price. It was August 1918, after four years of war, that the allies launched what is called the “Hundred Days Offensive”. The Canadians came, they were 100,000-strong. They passed through many cities: Amiens, Arras, Bourlon, Cambrai and Valenciennes. They arrived at our city of Mons November 9th 1918, and they fought until November 11th. Consequently, Mons was the last great accomplishment by the Canadians during the Great War. We must never forget that of 600,000 Canadian soldiers who came here on our territory; 66,000 young men who died in the effort to liberate us. More than 170,000 wounded. Thank you Canada. Thank you Canadians. We are very grateful. Thank you very much. A message from the Government of Canada.
