Really, no it wouldn’t be guilt. I don’t think my buddies would want me to feel guilty because they got killed because you know, it could have happened to me too and not them. Or the ones that got wounded its not much the fellas that got killed could say about them. But I don’t know, I don’t know how to describe that, how to put it. We have reunions. When we get together we don’t like to bring up about this guy getting killed or that guy getting killed. We just like to sit around and talk about the good old times you know, that we had, not the bad times. It was something that it will always be in our memories. We’ll always remember them, but it’s something that when we get together we just want to get together and be happy. Sometimes in my quiet moments and that I could be sitting down at the table. I might be playing patience or I might be having a game of cribbage with my wife. And sometimes she’ll say you know, “Charlie, you’re not saying too much.” “No, just thinking.” “What are you thinking about?” Sometimes I’ll tell her. You know, I’d like to see this guy again or I’d like t see that guy again like you know. So, but some of them are so far away I’m not gonna see them anyway. Some of them could be out west now and I don’t know if they’re alive or dead.

Charlie Rees

Charles Rees was born in Lance Cove, Newfoundland on July 14, 1930. He first experienced the consequences of war at the age of 12, when he and the rest of his community were involved in rescuing the crew from two ships torpedoed nearby. While working in Toronto, Mr. Rees made the decision to enlist for service in the Korean War. He was sent overseas with the 1st Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment, where he served a one year tour of duty on the 38th Parallel. When he returned to Canada, he trained as a paratrooper. After leaving the service, he was a pressman in the printing trade. Mr. Rees joined both the Atlantic and Canadian Korean Veterans Associations.
