An interesting feature of this was that we searched, had to search all these buildings on the shore and I remember kicking open a door into an office area at the end of one of these warehouse things and I think I saw a grey black man that night because he was, he was sleeping in this office on a little cot that was about 6 inches off the floor. And the 20mm bullets are stitched, how they missed his face and body I don't know. They were just that much, and he was just lying on there shaking like a leaf and anyhow we left him to his, to his, we didn't bother with him, he was not offensive, not offensive at all. We left him to sort of come out of his shock but it must have been quite a shock for him too. And we, we took over the village there, the town hall and established things there. After four days, I also joined a smaller party and we took a boat up one of the tributaries one night and we had to reach a rather large river where there was a, they had to cross by a small bridge or a pontoon, a ferry-type thing. And it was merely to get behind the enemy and create a diversion.

After the initial attack they had to search all the buildings one by one.

Frank Rusling

Frank Rusling was born in Belton, Lincolnshire, England on January 30, 1922. His father moved the family to the county of Suffolk in England where he grew up. He joined the Royal Navy at the age of 15 because of his love for the ocean. He entered the communications’ department of the navy and trained in visual signalling where he was very successful during his training and very rapidly reached the rank of Yeoman of Signals. The first vessel he was on was the HMS Sheffield. However, he did work on other vessels and travelled to several parts of the world with the Royal Navy. After the war he joined the Canadian Pacific police where he served for 30 years. He now resides in Saint John, New Brunswick.
