Mr. Stokes briefly describes nocturnal inspections of protective barbed wire for possible German sabotage.

Lester Stokes

Lester Stokes was born on November 9, 1897 in Sombre, Ontario. When the war started, he was living in Berlin, Ontario among a largely German immigrant community. Uncomfortable with this situation Mr. Stokes ran away at the age of 16 to enlist, following in his brother's footsteps. He joined the 126th Battalion, trained at Camp Borden, and went overseas in a convoy. Mr. Stokes joined the 116th Regiment in England and was with them when Vimy Ridge was captured by the Canadian army.
