It’s me, Ellie the elephant! Being in the military can be hard. People who serve in the Canadian Armed Forces give so much when they are doing their jobs. But members of their families also make sacrifices. Imagine if your mother, father, big brother or big sister were in the military. What if they had to travel far away from home to help others?
You would miss them so much. You would worry if they were safe. Lots of military members also have to move around the country every few years. Their families usually come along. Moving so often can be very difficult.
There could be kids in your school who have family members in uniform. Maybe you are one of them! Let’s keep military families in mind this Veterans’ Week. It is important for us to recognize Veterans who have served. It’s also important to remember that their families make sacrifices for peace, too.
I am going to pick some dandelions to help us honour them. Dandelions are a great symbol for military families. They are pretty but they are also tough. They can grow almost anywhere. Just like dandelions, military families put down roots wherever they are planted. You can support Veterans and their families by being a good friend.
