Youth remember Newfoundland and Labrador and the First World War

This section provides educators and youth with learning activities to explore the important role played by Canada and Newfoundland in the Battles of the Somme and Beaumont-Hamel. These learning resources are designed to educate youth about the history and personal experiences of those who fought in these battles.

Use the power of art and imagination to bring history to life! Help students connect with the tomb of an unknown Newfoundland First World War soldier by considering who the soldier inside may have been.

From June 28-July 1, 2024, the remains of Newfoundland and Labrador’s unknown soldier will lay in state at the Confederation Building in St. John’s. Artwork created by students across Newfoundland and Labrador will be displayed as part of this historic event.
