SAMUEL LOUNT
1791-1838

A martyr of the Rebellion of 1837, Pennsylvania-born Samuel
Lount farmed and operated a smithy near Holland Landing. He
was generous with help and advice to new settlers, and from
1834 to 1836 sat as a reformer in the Legislative Assembly.
Hoping to expedite social and political change, Lount agreed to
command forces in William Lyon Mackenzie's uprising against
the government. When the rebels were soundly defeated on
December 7, 1837, Lount attempted to flee the country. He was
captured weeks later and convicted of treason along with another
prominent rebel, Peter Matthews. Disregarding petitions for par-
don bearing thousands of signatures, the authorities hanged the
two men at Toronto on April 12, 1838.

This memorial is intended to be a peace memorial rather than a war memorial. The statue of a grieving mother with a child in her arms was designed by Mr. John van Boxtel, who was liberated by Canadian Forces in Holland in 1944. The figure was cast at Asten, near Arnhem, Holland. It symbolizes all the suffering of a country at war, but also hope for peace in the future.

Colonel F. A. Tilston, V.C., C.D., LLD., unveiled the memorial on September 16, 1990, with numerous dignitaries in attendance from the Armed Forces, Veterans, representatives of Federal and Provincial Governments, as well as Regional Mayors and other dignitaries.

The stele is dedicated to the local war dead of the First and Second World Wars. This cenotaph was erected, in 1920, by the citizens of Kettleby.

A small mortar is on display beside the cenotaph. This is a German 76mm Leitche Minenwerfer. It was a 400lb. model with recoil and a rifled barrel, capable of delivering a 1-kg charge a distance of between 325 and 1425 meters. It was also very mobile by using either the built in carrying handles or by wheeling it around like a wheelbarrow, by installing the wheels and two long horizontal poles as handles. The Leichte Minenwerfer was also used to shoot messages to the rear area by use of a special non- explosive message round. They were then retrieved by runners and delivered to the officer in charge. The German Army actually considered trench mortars to be demolition equipment rather than weapons, so they issued them to Pioneer Battalions (engineers).

A ceremony is held here each Rememberance Day. Found at the entrance to the Kettleby Cemetery.

Dedicated to the men who lost their lives in the two World Wars, this memorial was originally located in front of the Schomberg Agricultural Arena, but moved to its current position beside the new Trisan Centre, in 2011. The Lions Club of Schomberg had the memorial re-lettered in 1977. Also featured is the logo of the 12th York Rangers, the local militia regiment which became part of the 127th Canadian Expeditionary Force in the Great War

Private Wesley Haines, a young local hero, died during the Boer War in South Africa. A member of the Royal Canadian Regiment of Infantry, 2nd (Special Service) Battalion "C" Company, he died of Enteric Fever on June 6, 1900. He is buried in the Braamfontein Garden of Remembrance in Johannesburg. His service number was 4272. The memorial featuring a bust in his likeness is the only memorial dedicated to an individual in the Veteran's Memorial Park.

This memorial was unveiled Remembrance Day 2015 at Seneca College, Newnham campus in Toronto. The service included Second World War Veterans, students from the School of National Defence at Seneca, Military College personnel, Majors and Lieutenants and Indigenous peoples.

Note: Due to construction, the memorial is relocated to the new coordinates at the traffic circle on Au Large Boulevard.

The third generation of a prominent Toronto family, Denison commanded a local cavalry regiment and served during the Fenian Raids (1866) and the Northwest Rebellion (1885). Also active in politics, he was one of the founders of the nationalist Canada First movement. Convinced that the only way in which Canada could preserve her sovereignty in North America was a part of the British Empire, he became prominent in the Imperial Federation League, which flourished until the early part of this century. Although never elected to office, he was a Toronto police magistrate for 43 years.

Troisième dans la lignée d’une famille en vue de Toronto, il commanda un régiment local de cavalerie pendant les invasions des Fénians (1866) et la Rébellion du Nord-Ouest (1885). Également actif en politique, il fut l’un des fondateurs du mouvement nationaliste « Canada First ». Convaincu que le Canada ne pouvait assurer sa souveraineté en Amérique qu’au sein de l’Empire britannique, il devint un membre éminent de l’Impérial Federation League. Il n’accéda jamais à la scène politique mais il occupa un poste important à la police de Toronto pendant 43 ans.

This metal plaque is dedicated to Lieutenant-Colonel George Taylor Denison III, and is inside the front doors of the LCol George Taylor Denison III Armoury.

Lieutenant-Colonel George Taylor Denison III (August 1839 – June 1925) was born in Toronto and educated at Upper Canada College and the University of Toronto. Called to the Bar in 1861, he entered local politics and served as a city councilor from 1865 to 1867. Denison had earlier, in 1854, joined the 1st Volunteer Militia Troop of Cavalry of York County and became its Commanding Officer in 1866 when the unit was renamed the Governor General’s Body Guard (now known as The Governor General’s Horse Guards). He saw active service during the Fenian Raids of 1866, during the North-West Rebellion of 1885 and championed Canadian participation in the South African War. He served as a judge of the Police Court from 1877 to 1921, but by 1922 Denison’s health was failing, and he died in 1925 at the age of 85.
