The Altar of Sacrifice was dedicated by the Prince of Wales on August 3, 1927 with the following words:

"In the name of the people of Canada, I set apart the altar of this Chamber to receive and hold forever the Book of Remembrance that the glory of those whose names are written therein may live for all generations."

The limestone block is from Derbyshire and was a gift from Great Britain. The altar features the Royal Arms, the Canadian coat of arms and the provincial shields. The inscription is from John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress.

This memorial scroll was erected by Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish and is dedicated to the members who volunteered for active service with Canada's fighting forces during the Second World War.

Historical Note: Our Lady of Perpetual Help church (15 LeBreton Street North) was established in the late 1930's at the corner of LeBreton and Eccles streets. The church closed in the summer of 2005 and its records and artifacts transferred to St. Patrick's Basilica. The Our Lady of Perpetual Help building continues to be used as a place of worship under the Orthodox Church as the Annunciation Orthodox Cathedral.

Erected by the Royal Engineers and the city of Ottawa, Wellington Street was unveiled in approximately 1826. Wellington Street was one of the first two streets (the other being Rideau Street) established by the Royal Engineers at the start of the construction of the Rideau Canal. It is named in honour of Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, KG,KP,GCB,GCH,PC,FRS (1769-1852) who was an important supporter of the Rideau Canal as a military necessity in the event of another American invasion. Wellesley was one of the leading military figures of the 19th century. He was commissioned in the British Army in 1787, a Colonel by 1796, and saw action in the Netherlands and later India.

Wellesley rose to prominence as a General during the Peninsular campaign of the Napoleonic Wars, and was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal after leading the Allied Forces to victory against the French in 1813. He served as the ambassador to France and was granted a Dukedom. Wellesley commanded the Allied Army which defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815. He fought in some 60 battles throughout his military career and remained Commander-in-Chief of the British Army until his death in 1852.

THE CANADIAN ROLE INTHE
DEFENCE OF HONG KONG

In late 1941, 1,975 Canadians arrived in
Hong Kong to reinforce the garrison. They
fought with courage and determination
against overwhelming odds after the
Japanese attacked on December 8. Many
distinguished themselves under fire,
including Company Sergeant-Major John
Robert Osborn, who won Canada's first
Victoria Cross of the Second World War,
During the seventeen-day battle, 290 men
died. After the surrender, 267 more perished
during long years of harsh captivity. The Canadians` role in the defence of Hong Kong
stands as an eloquent expression of their
lasting honour.

This memorial rock and plaque is situated next to the Hong Kong Memorial Wall and describes the Canadian role in the defence of Hong Kong. The memorial was erected by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, unveiled approximately on August 15, 2009. It is dedicated to all Canadians who participated and made the sacrifice of their lives in the defence of Hong Kong during the Second World War.

The painting is a depiction of angels from the sky coming in the battlefield to a meet a dying soldier and Jesus Christ on the cross. This memorial plaque was erected by the commanding officer (from 19 Jun 1916 to 13 Sep 1916) Lieutenant Colonel D.R. Street, officers N.C.O.s. and Men of the (Ottawa) 77th Overseas Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force (C.E.F.). The plaque was unveiled on June 11, 1916 and is dedicated to St. Patrick's Basilica in appreciation for the privilege of worshipping in this church.

The 77th Battalion, which was authorized on 10 July 1915 as the '77th "Overseas" Battalion', CEF, embarked for Great Britain on 19 June 1916. It provided reinforcements for the Canadian Corps in the field until 22 September 1916, when its personnel were absorbed by the '47th' and '73rd "Overseas" Battalion, CEF' and the battalion was disbanded.

This memorial Celtic cross is dedicated to the workers and their famillies who died while building the Rideau Canal. It was constructed after the War of 1812 on fears of an American invasion of the St. Lawrence River, it served as an alternative shipping route between Montreal and Kingston.

The granite celtic cross has five engraved symbols:
centre - an Irish harp to symbolize the nationality of most of the workers
top - a pick and shovel to symbolize to tools used in the construction of the canal
right - a mosquito to symbolize the ever-present bug
bottom - a wheel barrow, another tool used in the construction
left - an explosion to symbolize the use of explosives during the construction.
