This 21st Battalion Memorial was erected in 1931 and is dedicated to the 21st Canadian Infantry Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force who died in the First World War. In May of 1915, 1,013 men left Kingston with the Battalion, but when they marched into Germany at war’s end, only 103 remained.

The imagery above the front inscription includes a cross, poppies over a sunrise and the battalion crest. A statue of a soldier stands atop the memorial. Battles in which the battalion participated are listed on the other three sides of the memorial. The reference to 1915-1918 marks the years the battalion were in France and Flanders.

The 21st Battalion, which was authorized on 7 November 1914 as the 21st Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, embarked for Britain on 6 May 1915. It disembarked in France on 15 September 1915, where it fought as part of the 4th Infantry Brigade, 2nd Canadian Division in France and Flanders until the end of the war. The battalion was disbanded on 30 August 1920.

On May 24, 1919, the 21st Battalion was demobilized in Kingston and the men discharged from the Canadian Expeditionary Force. An Association was formed from their numbers, and reunions were held annually until 1976 when their numbers dwindled to a handful of surviving members. The 21st Battalion is perpetuated in today’s military by the Princess of Wales’ Own Regiment, a Kingston Militia unit. Each year on Remembrance Day the Regiment parades to the 21st Battalion Memorial, to honour their memory.

The War of 1812 Memorial, consisting of a stone cairn, bronze plaque and an anchor, was erected in memory of officers and seamen of the Royal Navy and Provincial Marine who served on Lake Ontario in defence of Canada.

On the afternoon of May 6, 1939, Brigadier H.F.H. Hertzberg, D.O.C., M.D. unveiled the plaque on the cairn as the Guard of Honour presented arms and the Royal Military College Band played “The King.” Wreaths were placed by the Kingston Historical Society and the Kingston Yacht Club. The parade then marched past the D.O.C. and brought the short ceremony to a close.

POINT FREDERICK BUILDINGS

This peninsula, headquarters for the Provincial Marine
(c.1790-1813), and of the Royal Navy (1813-1853), was the
major British naval base on Lake Ontario during the War of
1812. Buildings surviving from this period include the Naval
Hospital, the guard House complex, and the Stone Frigate.
On the southern part of the peninsula stands Fort Frederick,
erected in 1812-13 but completely rebuilt in 1846. In 1875
the Point was chosen as the site of the Royal Military College
of Canada which admitted its first class in June 1876.

The Chatham Memorial Arena was built in 1949 on the grounds of a training area used by the Canadian Forces during the Second World War. When the war ended the region no longer required such a large amount of land for military purposes so the Memorial Arena was erected. Construction was undertaken after the restrictions on the use of structural steel were lifted following the end of the Second World War. It was officially opened on October 14, 1949. Display cases along the east side of the building give glimpses into the past of the Memorial Arena as well as the teams that have called it home.

Every year at the opening of the hockey season, the arena was rededicated in honur of those who died and those who served in the Second World War. On October 22, 1954, the arena was rededicated by Reverend Hugh F. Davidson to those who made the supreme sacrifice in both World Wars. This annual rededication continued into the 1960s.

The Ridgeway Nine Memorial was unveiled during the 150th Anniversary events of the Battle of Ridgeway by the Fort Erie Museum Association, and made possible by donations from The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada, The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada Association, Bertie Historical Society, and Fort Erie Museum Services. The statue honours the nine brave volunteers who fell at Lime Ridge on June 2, 1866, while defending the Niagara frontier against Fenians.

The Battle of Ridgeway, also known as the Battle of Lime Ridge or Limestone Ridge, was fought near the village of Ridgeway and the town of Fort Erie in present-day Ontario. The morning of June 2, 1866, was the first modern industrial-era battle fought and led by Canadian troops and Canadian officers. Around 850 Canadian soldiers fought with 750 to 800 Irish-American Fenian insurgents who had invaded Canada near Fort Erie in the hopes of holding Canada ransom for Irish independence. Between 1866 and 1871, this group raided Canadian territory from New Brunswick to Manitoba.

Nine Canadian soldiers were killed in action. Thirty-three men were wounded, some severely enough to require amputation of their limbs. Four more Canadian militia volunteers eventually died in the months following the battle, either of wounds sustained or of disease contracted at Ridgeway.
