This Honour Roll lists Weston Golf Club and Country Club Limited members who served during the Second World War. It is framed with a letter proposing construction of the Weston Golf Club and Country Club Memorial Pillars, and an image of a pillar as-built.

This style of an Honour Roll was designed by A.J. Casson when he worked at Sampson-Matthews, a prominent midtown Toronto lithography and commercial art company.

WAR MEMORIALS

LETTER
This letter was sent to the membership by the War Memorial Committee Chairman W.D. Lynch regarding the pillars. The funding of the project was to be by voluntary subscription amongst the members.

PILLARS
The club also paid tribute to the war veterans by building memorial pillars at the entrance of the property. The stones used were taken from the Humber River. A bronze plaque on one of the pillars lists the names of those who made the supreme sacrifice.

In 1945, a War Memorial Committee was appointed to raise funds by voluntary subscription of Weston Golf and Country Club members for a memorial to honour their members that served in the Second World War. The committee wanted the memorial to be both beautiful and practical, so suggested an improved main entrance to the club property with stone pillars and bronze plaques.

Two stone pillars, approximately 30" square at the base, and 9' tall including lamps, were made by local stonemason Jim Gove using fieldstone harvested from the river valley by "Old Charlie Gillis", a local teamster. The Weston Golf and Country Club Memorial Pillars were built in 1946 to hold plaques commemorating club members who served during the Second World War.

On May 9, 1920, members of Wesley Methodist Church at Dundas Street West and Ossington Avenue dedicated a new organ inscribed: “ln memory of the heroic dead” to honour the twenty-five men of the church who lost their lives during the war. The saxophone organ stop, the only one in Canada, and perhaps only the second installed in North America was memorialized to Flight Sub-Lieutenant George K. Williams, who served with the Royal Naval Air Service, No. 3 Wing. He was killed in an accident while training in France in June 1916.

Fire destroyed the church on the evening of 22 November 1957, just months after the congregation paid for the restoration of the memorial organ. The congregation did not rebuild.

The late Colonel F.A. Tilston established admission scholarships for students entering the First Year Pharmacy, with the highest admission index and who have not won an admission award of greater value. One of these scholarships will be awarded to an Indigenous student. Colonel Tilston was a 1929 Pharmacy graduate and retired President and Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Drug Limited. He was the first University of Toronto graduate (and the 9th Canadian) to receive the Victoria Cross, the highest Commonwealth award of wartime honour, in the Second World War.
