FALAISE

To honour the dead and care for the sick and injured, Sunnybrook Hospital was
originally built as a living memorial to the men and women of the Armed Forces of
Canada. That legacy remains a cornerstone of Sunnybrook's existence to this day.

When Sunnybrook opened in 1948, each treatment block in the main building was
identified by a plaque representing military or places of battle where so much was
sacrificed.

This re-dedication of those plaques, which were removed when Sunnybrook transitioned
from a veterans facility to a fully affiliated academic general hospital in 1966, is a fitting
reminder of the historical origins that created the great medical institutions Sunnybrook
Health Sciences Centre has become today.

"At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
we will remember them".

On August 16, the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division set out to take Falaise. The following day, its ruins finally fell. Meanwhile, the 4th Canadian and the 1st Polish Armoured Divisions hurried to block the German line of retreat just east of the town. As American and Free French forces sped from the south toward Chambois, the 4th Canadian Armoured occupied Trun from the north on August 18. While the division prepared a line of defence along the Falaise Trun Chambois highway to bar the Germans from breaking out of the pocket, most of the 1st Polish Armoured took up position further east to head off the imminent enemy attempt to break in and extricate their comrades. The rest of it drove on to Chambois and there joined forces with American troops on August 19.

Lancaster Wing is currently called C Wing.

The Avro Lancaster was derived from the unsuccessful twin-engine Avro Manchester bomber that first flew in 1939. The decision was made in late 1940 to replace the two Rolls Royce Vulture engines of the Manchester with four of the more reliable Rolls Royce Merlin (in Canada, Packard Merlin) engines, which had a proven record in the Hurricane and Spitfire fighter designs. The revised design was an immediate success and the Lancaster went on to carry the heaviest individual bomb loads of the Second World War. The Lancaster was manufactured in Canada by Victory Aircraft Ltd. in Malton, Ontario, and 430 Mk 10 versions were built. In post-war use, the Canadian- built Lancasters went on to serve in highly useful roles. Quickly converted into photographic reconnaissance variants for charting and mapping and into maritime patrol versions, the Lancaster soldiered on well into the Cold War era.

Ortona Wing is currently called A Wing.

The mediaeval town of Ortona, with its castle and stone buildings, was situated on a ledge overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Its steep, rubble-filled streets limited the use of tanks and artillery and thus made this an infantryman's struggle. During several days of vicious street fighting, the Canadians smashed their way through walls and buildings—"mouseholing" as they called it. This was Christmas 1943. Meanwhile, a subsidiary attack had been launched to the northwest and the Germans, in danger of being cut off, withdrew from Ortona. The city officially fell on December 28.

Although the plaques were removed when Sunnybrook transitioned from a Veterans facility to a fully affiliated academic general hospital in 1966, they were rededicated in 2018. Atlantic Wing is currently called B Wing.

From the very outset of hostilities in the Second World War in 1939, the Atlantic supply route from North America to the United Kingdom was threatened. For six long years the Royal Canadian Navy, the Canadian Merchant Navy and the RCAF were central participants in what was to be known as the Battle of the Atlantic.

The sea lanes of the North Atlantic formed a grim battleground. Navigation was hazardous, and sailors in the navy and merchant marine died not only from enemy attack, but from exposure and accidents in the fog and winter gales. Nor was protection sufficient to prevent heavy losses. There were too few naval vessels and maritime patrol aircraft available, as well as a severe lack of training and modern equipment and technology.

In 1939, Canada possessed only a few dozen Canadian-registered merchant ships, six destroyers, five small minesweepers, two training vessels, and a single squadron of modern military flying boats. No one would have predicted that, from this tiny beginning, Canada's forces would go on to play a large and significant part in the Atlantic war, and that the Canadian Merchant Navy would carry cargoes around the world.

This Honour Roll commemorates the courage and service of young men
and women of the Jewish Community of Timmins who volunteered
in the Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War.

They, like their parents and grandparents took great pride in this country
and appreciated the opportunity to establish their own roots in Canada.

The first Jewish settlers to Northern Ontario arrived at the beginning
of the 20th Century. By 1917, Jewish railway workers, farmers, retailers,
and professionals had settles in Timmins, and by the early 30's they built
a vibrant community of over 100 families, a new synagogue - B'nai Israel
Congregation with a full-time rabbi and teachers for the children.

A very active B'mai Brith Lodge, Hadassah Chapter and a Young Judea were
formed, contributing to a vital social and philanthrophic environment.

The generous contributions of B'nai Israel Congregation
of Timmins enables the Sunnybrook and Women's
Jewish Chapel to continue to provide
spiritual sustenance to Jewish Veterans
as well as staff, patients and visitors.

The We Will Remember Them Window was donated by the Ontario Command of the Royal Canadian Legion. St. John is seen in the center with First World War symbols throughout including two Legion badges at the top which astride the Canadian Army badge. Below St. John are important First World War symbols: the lapel pin for King and Empire services rendered for those who served during the war; a sliver cross which was given to mothers who sons had died in battle; and the lapel pin for Canadian Expeditionary Force service at the Front, for soldiers that fought at the Front - it has a British Flag.
