The Soldiers' Memorial is dedicated to the men of Walkerton area who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars. Mrs. Oswald Lumley, the wife of First World War Veteran, Oswald Lumley, wrote the inscription and the McIntosh Granite Co. Ltd. of Toronto designed the memorial. It is of gray granite and has a three step granite base, with die and cap, on which is mounted a huge statue of a Canadian soldier standing at ease with rifle in hand. The monument is 17 feet high and lists the names of the 49 Walkerton heroes who fell in the war, with the names of the battles where they lost their lives. It was erected on the northwest corner of the Armoury grounds on a raised mound thirty feet square.

The memorial was unveiled on July 23, 1921, in the presence of a great throng of citizens, old boys and visitors. The order of service included a chorus, "O Canada" by the pupils of the Public, Separate and High Schools; Funeral march, 48th Highlanders' Band; Prayer, Rev. Capt. Perdue; Hymns, "O God, Our Help in Ages Past," and "Abide With Me"; Scripture reading out of Revelations, by Rev. Will Todd of Algona, Iowa; a short address by His Worship Mayor McNab; the unveiling of the monument by the honoured guest of the occasion, General Shannon of London, the head officer of this Military District, who in so doing paid an eloquent tribute to "my boys". "The Last Post", was given by a member of the 48th Highlanders, followed by the benediction by Rev. W.H. Burgess and the Dead March in Saul by the 48th Highlanders' Band. After the unveiling a bouquet for each soldier was placed on the monument by the I.O.D.E., a number of relatives brought flowers, a beautiful wreath was presented by the Old Boys' Executive, and the Union Jack, by the Walkerton Horticultural Society.

During the summer of 1982 the Legion Branch constructed the planter around the base of the cenotaph, built and poured the sidewalk from Colborne Street to the front of the monument, had the monument cleaned and the lettering raised, and planted the shrubbery at the base of the cenotaph.

2021 was the 100th anniversary of the poppy as a symbol of Remembrance in Canada. To mark the occasion, members of Walkerton Legion Branch 102 placed 50 painted poppy rocks around the base of the cenotaph, which included one for The Unknown Soldier.

Erected in 1924, this memorial is dedicated to the local war dead of the First and Second World War. In November 1920, the Township of Eastnor (now the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula) approved the purchase of a War Memorial. The Monument was erected in the Eastnor Cemetery on Lot 20 Concession 4 in the former Township of Eastnor.

In May of 1924 the Monument was moved from that location and placed in front of the Eastnor Township Hall (now the Rotary Hall). In 1929 The Eastnor Horticultural Society purchased four village lots from the Tackaberry sub-division across the road from the Township Hall and established the Memorial Park. In March of 1931 the Monument was moved once again to its present location in the Memorial Park.

In 1996 Eastnor Horticultural Society and Branch #202 of The Royal Canadian Legion Lion's Head did some major work at the Cenotaph site which included bringing the grade of the property down to street level, some five to six feet lower than it was, to make it easier for veterans access. The Monument in the centre is the original one which contains the names of residents of Eastnor Township who were killed in action during the First World War. The one to the left contains the names of Lion's Head residents who were killed in action during the First World War and the Second World War. The one on the right contains names of Eastnor Township who were killed in action in the Second World War.

SERGEANT JOHN PEARSON V.C. 1825-1892

Born in Yorkshire, England, Pearson joined the 8th (The King's
Royal Irish) Regiment of Light Dragoons in 1844, and served
with this unit in India during the Mutiny. On June 17, 1858,
near the town of Gwailor the squadron with which Pearson
served formed part of a small force which routed the advancing
enemy. His unit then charged through the enemy camp, and
returned with two captured guns under a heavy and converging
fire. For their gallantry in this action, Pearson and three
companions received the British empire's highest decoration for
valour, the Victoria Cross. In 1880 he emigrated to Canada
and in 1888 settled on a farm some nine miles west of here.

SERGENT JOHN PEARSON V.C. 1825-1892

The site where this monument was erected is known as Monument Corners. The name Monument Corners came about when the cenotaph was erected in 1920 by the then Township of Lindsay (now The Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula). The property was donated to the township by the McLay family in early 1920. The original monument in the centre contains the names of residents of the township who were killed in action during the First World War.

At the end of the Second World War the township erected one monument at each side of the original one. The monument on the left contains the names of Lindsay residents who were killed during that war. On the right side are the names of the First World War Veterans who have died since the end of the First World War. The additions were completed in early 1947.

On August 21, 1947, Reeve Selby Forbes of Lindsay Township invited the general public as well as Bruce Peninsula Legion Branches to attend the unveiling service for these monuments. The fourth monument in the front was added at a later date and contains the names of Lindsay Township residents who have died since the end of the First and Second World Wars.

The Wiarton Cenotaph was unveiled in 1922. The limestone for the memorial was sent from England and depicts a lone First World War male soldier standing at rest, grasping his rifle in front of him. J.S. Cook & Sons of Wiarton worked to erect the monument at a cost of $3,000. The names of those killed in the First World War were etched into its stone, while names of those who lost their lives in the Second World War were later added. Dates were added for the Korean War and United Nations Peacekeepers were recognized on the inscription.

On May 25, 2024, the community celebrated a project four years in the making to refurbish and rededicate the cenotaph, with the newly installed mural becoming a part of the reimagining midway through. Joe Vanderzand was the Royal Canadian Legion Wiarton Branch 208 president when the project began. Vanderzand first brought concerns about the failing cenotaph infrastructure to Town of South Bruce Peninsula council in 2021.

The restoration work included repointing the soldier memorial, demolishing and removing the old flower beds and retaining walls and rebuilding them, waterproofing the interior concrete of the garden and installing stone veneer on the retaining wall and garden beds. Custom wood bench tops were fabricated for the sitting area around the perimeter of the stone retaining walls.

The Priceville Cenotaph was erected through donations made by Priceville and area residents. The marble statue of a soldier sits on a granite base.

Initially the structure was to honour those who served and in memory of those who died in the First World War. The original cost of the cenotaph was $2,400.00 and it was dedicated on October 4, 1921.

Priceville servicemen were involved in the battles at Ypres and Mons. One hundred and twenty seven men from the area served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Fifteen were killed and sixty were wounded.

In the Second World War, eighty-two residents from this area served in various branches of the Armed Forces. Five died and their names were added to the cenotaph.

In 1992, a committee restored the cenotaph and developed the surrounding area into a park. On July 16, 1995 a re-dedication service was held.

The Owen Sound Cenotaph was dedicated on December 1, 1920, in honour of those who gave their lives in the First World War. It was erected by the City of Owen Sound and the Townships of Sydenham, Keppel, Derby and Sarawak. Designed by Emanuel Hahn, water flows from the top of the cenotaph down the carved face of the column to a basin, with a frog resting above it, where it streams through decorative channels to a pool at ground level. At the top of the column a bronze dove holds an olive branch in its bill. On the face of the monument, there is a line from the poem “For the Fallen” composed by English poet Laurence Binyon in 1914.

On May 30, 1982, the cenotaph was re-dedicated to also recognize those who fought in the Second World War and Korean War.

Over time, several changes were made to the cenotaph. The most significant change was the removal of water from the composition. The basin was replaced by a large raised concrete plinth. The existing bronze dove was created and donated by Massey artist John Mieshnikowski and installed in the early 1980’s when he relocated to the community. Its stylized appearance, scale and material are very similar to the original cast bronze dove which has been lost and this new dove has become an important part of the cenotaph. Three plaques and a bronze cross were added to the face of the cenotaph. One of the plaques covered engraved dates.

In October of 2007, a report was commissioned to develop a plan to conserve and restore the Cenotaph. Wendy Shearer Landscape Architect, MHBC Planning Limited and Sue Maltby, Conservation Consultant were hired for the conservation and restoration of the cenotaph. Construction work on the cenotaph was undertaken by Allen Hastings Ltd. In 2009, with assistance from a Federal Grant and funds from the City and Georgian Bluffs, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 6) and Cobble Beach, efforts to restore the Cenotaph began.

One of the original features of the cenotaph, a cast bronze frog was missing. Ms. Qenefer Browne, executor and daughter of Emanuel Hahn donated a cast bronze frog that was created by Elizabeth Wyn Wood (wife of Emanuel Hahn) in 1937. This frog was added to the cenotaph to replace the missing feature. It is a symbolic figure demonstrating the life giving qualities of the water. A rededication ceremony was held on November 9, 2009. The water was turned on and continues to trickle today.

The cross and plaques were removed from the face of the cenotaph and installed on a new stone monument located near the existing cenotaph.

The property on which the Mildmay-Carrick War Memorials are now situated was purchased by the Bruce Preparedness League from Mrs. John F. Schuett. The President of the League was Mr. Joe Thompson of Clifford. This occurred shortly after the First World War and at that time the present centre memorial was erected. In 1951, extensive renovations were carried out on the property and the two smaller stones were then put in place commemorating the men who sacrificed their lives in the Second World War. It was at this time that the circular cement sidewalk was constructed, the drinking fountain placed, the shrubs and bushes planted and the fence laid that still encloses the property. March 24, 1919 - Carrick Council on cenotaph: "That this Council make a grant of six hundred dollars towards erecting a soldiers' memorial at Mildmay and Messro. Montag, Lewis and Schnurr act in conjunction with a committee from the Village Council and Preparedness League in the selection and construction of said memorial."
