This memorial is dedicated to those who served our country. It was erected  by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 576 and the Community of Spanish. The unveiling of the new cenotaph was held for the Annual Remembrance Day Service. In 1992, a huge anchor was brought to North Bay by an army vehicle for the Royal Canadian Legion. Rev. Archie Nesseth transported it to its present site at the Parkette.

A new plaque dedicated to the U.N. Peace Keeping Force was added in 1999 to the left side of the monument. All of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 576 Remembrance Day Ceremonies are conducted at the memorial and are attended by residents of Spanish, two local schools and the Rock Haven School for Exceptional Children. The memorial has become a special place for ceremonies. When the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 576 celebrated its 40th anniversary in 1998 the memorial was included in the ceremony. A ceremony also was held at the memorial in memory of a Second World War veteran who passed away.

Behind the memorial is a flower bed shaped like a cross which will house tulips and a flag pole will be installed at the head of the flower bed. The memorial was built in 1990 by Rev. M.A. Nesseth with some assistance from Comrade K. Preston and V. Lortie. Excerpts from Mid-North Monitor, September 19, 1990.

The Branch 562 Pipe Band from Elliot Lake attended the dedication ceremony. The memorial was dedicated by the District H Deputy Commander Sam McGhee and blessed by the Branch Chaplain Deacon Archie Nesseth. Assisting at the unveiling was Veteran Nelson Robinson of Spanish. During the dedication, Pipe major Doug O’Connor piped the Lament, the very moving “Flowers of the Forest”. The parkette was purchased by the Township of Shedden from the Ministry of Natural Resources, then lent to the Legion Branch who plan to make the triangle a Memorial Parkette.

This memorial was built in 1919 with St. Joe Island stone and erected in the new park which the residents of Richards Landing acquired. It was the property of the old Lakeside Hotel which the Women Auxiliary beautified. It was an imposing sight to passengers on vessels in the river.

The base of the monument is 12 feet square by four feet high and a stone measuring six feet by four feet was set next and finally, the top square measured two feet six inches square. A bronze statue of a Canadian soldier was planned, but eventually a stone one was created. A marble slab three feet six inches by one foot six inches wide was planned to be set into the second square to bear the names of each soldier from the Island who gave his life for his country.

The greater part of the work was completed locally, in consultation with Mr. James Pollard of Sault Ste. Marie. In addition to the memorial in memory of the dead soldiers, those who have returned, about fifty in number, were presented with a gold watch. (Source: Sault Star, Monday, May 26, 1919, Monument To Be Put Up at Richards Landing for Fallen).

The memorial was dedicated July 1, 1919 in front of a large gathering and on a very hot day. The Rev. M.J. McDonald opened the proceeding with prayer and was followed by Judge Stone, who as chairman, introduced the principal speaker Dr. Robb M.P. of Blind River. Rev. McDonald eulogized the boys who now rest in Flanders Fields having answered their king and country's call to arms, but paid the supreme sacrifice. Captain H.L. Cocks (Emmanuel Church Minister) M.C. who was in charge of the detachment of uniformed veterans who attended, had the honour of presenting to each man from the Landing, a gold watch.

The following were recipients of gifts from the people of St. Joseph: L.C. Julian Smedley, Pte John Cruickshanks, Cpl. Dan McNabb, Cpl. Wm. Logan, Fred Hadden, Will Caulfield, Sgt. Archie McNabb, Pte Percy Adams, Pte Fred McNabb, Douglas Currie, Ephriam Pollock, John Peters, William Cooper, George Hewitt, Earl Kent (Earle), Pte Iran Holmes, Pte Hans Paterson, Oscar Honsberger, Will Hadden, Alex McKinnon, Sgt. Robert Morton, Capt H.B. Trout, Pte Bob Fyfe, Pte John Burnside, Pte Russel Harrison, Pte M.N. Ples, Cpl. Ed Springay, George Girard, Fred B. Kent, Sgt. George B. Trout, Sgt. Anthony Dingle, Charlie Owen, Arthur Witley, J. MacGowan, Earl Wilson, J. D. Mcleod, Cpl. Norman Robinson, Nursing Sister M. Ferguson, Rya Kent (Roy), Henry Wigmore, Stanley Chester, Cpl. James Harten, Pte Alec McArthur.

The cost of the memorial was defrayed by local subscription and grant from the council. (Source: Sault Star, July 2, 1919, Dedication of War Memorial at Richards Landing.)

The park where the memorial was erected was seeded with grass and all the trees were planted. The monument was ready for the tablet and statue, the coping stone being placed on it. (Source: Sault Star, Wednesday, April 28, 1920).

A life-like sculptured figure of a Canadian soldier, similar to those who went overseas will be placed on the monument. The figure has arrived in Sault Ste. Marie and is in the possession of Mr. James Pollard. It was imported from Italy. The model for the statue was Harold Young of St. Joseph Island. (Source: Sault Star, Wednesday, July 21, 1920).

Richards Landing has received two machine guns from the government which will be installed in the Memorial Park. (Source: Sault Star, November 19, 1920). Note: According to Harold Armstrong, one of the machine guns was later placed in Hilton Beach.

This memorial was erected in 1957 by Chief William Pine in memory of his son and others who served their country in the Second World War. Private William Pine died in action near Caen, France and was originally buried six miles south east of the city in Mondeville Temporary Cemetery. On March 16, 1945, he was reburied in Bretteville-Sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery in Calvados, France.

Excerpts from the Sault Daily, December 2, 1957:

"Pte. William Pine enlisted in the Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury Regiment Sept. 29, 1939. Chief Pine, speaking through an interpreter said, "His name shall now live here for all time." Rev. B. King-Edward told the gathering that the dedication of the memorial is to "one man in name but it is also a memorial to all those who died for the cause of freedom." He said the dead had fought for the "priceless heritage" of the Canadian way of life. Mrs. Cliff Lesage, regional president of Homemaker's Clubs in Northern Ontario, and vice president of the Garden River Club, also paid tribute to the honour of war heroes as she spoke for her organization. "It is not death alone that makes a man a hero," she said. "Every man is a hero who offers to sacrifice his life for what he honestly believes are the just rights of his country and his friends." "To our heroes all - to those who died and to those who were willing to die, we offer our humble thanks at this dedication today." Wreaths were laid at the foot of the memorial by members of the Pine family, the Homemaker's Club, the Indian Affairs Department, and the Garden River School."

This memorial is dedicated to the veterans of the First and Second World Wars. It was erected by the Women's Institute.

Article from the Bruce Mines Spectator, May 31, 1923: COL. ROWLAND UNVEILED ECHO BAY MEMORIAL

The memorial tablet, erected by the Epworth League of Echo Bay United Church, was unveiled on Thursday afternoon by Col. P.T. Rowland, who, in a brief and very interesting address, appealed for a better understanding of the returned man and his problems. The chair was taken by Rev. W.B. Smith, B.A., and addresses were given by Capt. Rev. H. McFarlane and Capt. Rev. Fred Smith, who emphasized the spirit of sacrifice shown by all during the war and the necessity of living up to the very highest ideals in times of peace. A solo, "In Flanders Fields", was beautifully rendered by Mrs. J.D. Gordon, accompanied by Mr. Gordon. The tablet was erected in memory of the forty-five men of the townships of MacDonald, Meredith and Aberdeen, who enlisted and served overseas during the Great War, of whom four paid the supreme sacrifice. It consisted of a solid piece of marble measuring 6 feet by 3 feet, with the names of the men engraved on it, and suitably framed in oak. Much credit is due to Rev. Capt. A. Harden, pastor of the church, and to the Epworth League, for the erection of this memorial. In the evening Rev. W. B. Smith gave a splendid recital of "The Black Tulip" to a capacity audience in the Orange Hall, and held the interest of all throughout the recital. Mrs. J.D. Gordon and Mrs. R. Wiber, L. R. A. M., rendered suitable musical selections to the great enjoyment of all present. A substantial amount was raised for the missionary fund of the church.

It is not known when the memorial was built, but it stands on property belonging to the town, next to the fire station and the Town Hall. It was relocated from its original site across the street from the Royal Canadian Legion in 1975. The town's records were lost in a fire in 1954 therefore more information is not available. A plaque lists the names of those servicemen who lost their lives overseas during the First and Second World Wars. A plaque honouring Korean War Veterans was added.

Excerpts from Bruce Mines Spectator, August 13, 1931 - 2000 People Attend Unveiling of Memorial, Regimental Band in Attendance

The service for the unveiling of Bruce Mines Soldiers' Memorial Sunday, August 9, drew large crowds from the town, surrounding communities and from Sault Ste. Marie, Thessalon and Blind River. The service was a very impressive one and will linger in the memories of those present. The Regimental Band directed by Bandmaster H.R. Pearce, A.L.O.M., F.C.C.M., W.O.I., were in attendance and generously contributed several selections and also accompanied in the hymns. Mr. Wm. White, War Veteran, who has worked untiringly for several years to have the Memorial erected, ably performed the duties of chairman. Revs. H. Peeling and R.K. Burnside read the Scripture selections and led in prayer. The Memorial was unveiled by Mr. Norman Beaton, of Ophir, father of one of the lads who passed on. The Last Post and Reveille were sounded by Bugler T. Swan, Sault. Beautiful wreaths were placed at the foot of the memorial by Mrs. Frazer Ingram, Miss Mary Wilson, members of the W.A. of the Anglican Church, the Patricia Women's Institute, Harmony Institute, Johnson Women's Institute, Mr. And Mrs. Wm. White, Mrs. Roach, Mrs. Newell, Allan Brown, Mr. And Mrs. Robt. Eakett, Mrs. Mannie Harmon, Mrs. John Harmon. Memorial addresses were delivered by Col. T.P. Rowland, Mayor Albert Grigg and Provincial Magistrate Peterson. The Memorial stands 10 feet high and is constructed of Jasper Conglomerate, the beautiful stone found only in Algoma. The monument is enclosed in a fenced off space beside the flag pole on the school grounds facing the Trans Canada Highway. Mr. Wm. White and Dr. V.S. Grigg who drafted the program and who with the other members of the Committee Miss H. Rickaby, Secretary, and Mr. W.L. Miller have worked for this cause are to be congratulated that the work has been brought to such a successful completion. The memorial underwent some changes in the 1990's and the result is what is seen today.

Originating in Scotland, the game of curling became very popular in the 19th century in Montreal and other Canadian cities. Growing interest in the sport inspired the founding of the Montreal Thistle Curling Club on December 19, 1843, by a small group of Montrealers made up of Messrs. D. McTavish, Robert Speirs, John Bethune, Richard Harrison, John Auld, John and William Greenshields, J. B. Torry, Robert Muir, J. Simpson and John Armour, Jr.

Club members initially played outdoors on the frozen St. Lawrence River and then two years later created a rink in an old flour shed near the Lachine Canal. The Montreal Thistle Curling Club began competing against other sports teams from Quebec and Ontario in 1845. The Club was incorporated in 1870 and inaugurated its new rink on St. Monique Street on December 24 of the same year. However, in 1911, the Canadian National Railway Company expropriated the association's land and property for an expansion project. The following year, the Montreal Thistle Curling Club established its new site at 1490 Fort Street. The 1930s were key years in the association's history as it gained recognition at numerous competitions. In 1933, the Club won five major trophies: the Jubilee Trophy, the Governor General's Trophy, the Holt Renfrew Cup, the Quebec City Cup and the Heather Bonspiel.

Interest in curling started to fade in the late 1970s and the Montreal Thistle Curling Club lost a significant number of members, causing its revenues drop even as its tax burden rose. One hundred and fifty-six years after its founding, financial difficulties forced the association to close its physical doors in the fall of 1999.
