MANITOULIN DISTRICT CENOTAPH
(Legion Crest)
177 LITTLE CURRENT
514 GORE BAY

NAVY     ARMY     AIR FORCE

“HONOUR LIBERTY THAT
THEY NOT DIE IN VAIN”

IN FLANDERS FIELDS
IN FLANDERS FIELDS THE POPPIES BLOW
BETWEEN THE CROSSES, ROW ON ROW
THAT MARK OUR PLACE; AND IN THE SKY
THE LARKS, STILL BRAVELY SINGING, FLY
SCARCE HEARD AMID THE GUNS BELOW.

WE ARE THE DEAD, SHORT DAYS AGO
WE LIVED, FELT DAWN, SAW SUNSET GLOW,
LOVED AND WERE LOVED, AND NOW WE LIE
IN FLANDERS FIELDS.

TAKE UP THE QUARREL WITH THE FOE;
TO YOU FROM FAILING HANDS WE THROW
THE TORCH; BE YOURS TO HOLD IT HIGH,
IF YE BREAK FAITH WITH US WHO DIE
WE SHALL NOT SLEEP, THOUGH POPPIES GROW
IN FLANDERS FIELDS.

Construction of the Manitoulin District Cenotaph took place from 1989 to 1997 in memory of 129 fallen militia and 2,200 Canadian Merchant Seamen. The inscription block on the Cenotaph pedestal was sculpted from marble and engraved with the names and details of four local soldiers killed in action in the First World War. Four more names were added after Second World War. In the early 1960s, the structure was heavily damaged in an auto accident. The statue was destroyed, but the remainder was salvaged and replaced with an obelisk. It was relocated on what eventually became the base of the Merchant Navy Memorial.

In the fall of 1989, a committee was organized to improve the park and replace the obelisk with a new statue. This culminated in a proposal to explore the possibility of expanding the complex and upgrading it to district status. Research indicated a new monument was needed. This led to sponsorship by local Royal Canadian Legions Branches 177 and 514, Little Current and Gore Bay. The funding was greatly enhanced by public support. This enabled further expansion, including the background structures, the memorial plaque wing, the monolith, the ceremonial dais, and other components.

The Cenotaph was dedicated on June 5, 1994. Since then, the numbers of names on the Cenotaph have increased to 130, and more are expected to be found. John C. Bryan is the designer of the memorial.

The Merchant Navy Memorial, Manitoulin Women's Memorial and Youth in Partnership with Veterans Memorial are also located in the Veterans' Memorial Gardens Complex.

A First World War soldier stands at attention on top of this memorial. It was originally erected to honour those who lost their lives in the First World War. Their names are inscribed on the left and rights sides of the memorial.

Names of those who lost their lives in the Second World War were later added on the back of the memorial. A plaque to remember the Korean War was added later at the front of the base.

The Veterans' Memorial Gardens Complex is comprised of two one-acre parks on either side of the side-road. The land for these parks was donated by two local farmers, George White, a Veteran of the First and Second World Wars, and family and Robert (Bert) Hill's wife, Mary and family.

The Complex is made up of the Manitoulin District Cenotaph, Merchant Navy Memorial, Manitoulin Women's Memorial, and the Youth in Partnership with Veterans Memorial. The project was conceived and supervised by First World War Veteran, James (Jim) Wilson. It was unveiled and dedicated in September 1921. It was jointly sponsored by Campbell and Carnarvon townships, and funded by local residents.

Comrade Bert Hill donated another park across the side road. The Veterans' Memorial Gardens is now comprised of a picnic area, parking and a parade square. It represents two towns, seven First Nations and 22 townships. All of this happened in four and a half years of a scheduled six year project. It was backed by the generosity of 11,200 residents, many donors, unlimited publicity by two local newspapers, two determined and generous Legions and an irrepressible, long suffering, never-say-die committee of twelve Second World War Veterans.

This memorial is dedicated to the First and Second World Wars' deceased comrades. The original Thessalon Cenotaph was erected in 1925 and dedicated in 1926. In 1988, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 182 canvassed Veterans and the Town of Thessalon to build a new cenotaph. They received overwhelming support to go ahead. In January 1989, a questionnaire was published in the Sentinel to solicit public opinion. A public vote was held in February 1989 for the complete restoration.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 182 membership approved the cenotaph design in May 1989. A tender of $33,000 from De Fazio Memorials Ltd. of Sault Ste. Marie in September 1989 was approved. A rededication ceremony was held August 25, 1990.
