The Royal Canadian Air Force (Women’s Division) Window is the third window in the Soldiers' Tower Staircase of Honour. It depicts a woman wartime radio operator.

The Staircase of Honour features a series of eight stained glass windows honouring the Canadian Armed Forces in action during wartime. The windows were officially dedicated on May 26, 2005, by the Honourable James K. Bartleman, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.

The three stained glass windows along the first flight of stairs, on the north wall, commemorate women’s service in the Second World War: Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRCNS), commonly known as Wrens, Canadian Women's Army Corps, and the Royal Canadian Air Force (Women's Division).

Turning and mounting the next flight, one passes three larger windows on the south wall honouring all those who served in the Armed Forces during both World Wars: Air Force, Navy, and Vimy Ridge. Ascending the third and final flight of stairs, two small windows are on the north wall: Canadian Merchant Navy and the Auxiliary Services of The Royal Canadian Legion, Canadian Red Cross, Knights of Columbus, Salvation Army and the Young Men’s Christian Association.

All eight windows in the Staircase of Honour were designed and installed by the Goodman Zissoff Stained Glass Studio of Kelowna, British Columbia — formerly the Russell C. Goodman Stained Glass Studios of Parry Sound, Ontario, which created the Memorial Window in the Memorial Room of the Tower.

George Stephen was a former teacher of Automotive Mechanics at Danforth Tech. George was born in Scotland and enlisted for three wars. He enlisted in the Boer War, but was found to be underage and sent back home to Scotland. When his family came to Canada, he enlisted with the 48th Highlanders, serving in both the First and Second World Wars. George was the Regimental Sergeant-Major of the 48th Highlanders from 1948 to 1951.

During the First World War, George served in the UK, France and Belgium. He was wounded at St. Julian in April 1915 and again at Vimy Ridge in April 1917. During the Second World War, George served in the UK, Sicily and Italy. Danforth’s archives have about 10 pieces of correspondence that he had sent to the school during the Second World War. He often wrote in green ink and signed his letters as Steve.

The painting is by Fred Savard, a former student at Danforth Tech who later taught Art at Danforth. Fred was an Art student at the school during 1927 to 1928 when the school was named Riverdale Technical School. Fred’s Permanent War Record form that is held in Danforth’s War Memorial Library indicates that he enlisted with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada on August 30, 1942. He was an Infantryman until he was seconded by either the Intelligence Unit or Headquarters of the regiment where his artistic ability was useful in interpreting maps and topography. When he was able, Fred sketched and painted scenes from the battlefield and a major portion of his wartime artwork is displayed by his former regiment in a room named after him at the John W. Foote, V.C. Armouries in Hamilton, Ontario. One of his more famous paintings is titled “Brewed Up” that depicts a shattered Sherman tank after it had caught fire and exploded.

The oil on canvas portrait of George Stephen was painted circa 1950 and signed and dated by the artist in 1953. The canvas is located in the hallway to the War Memorial Library.

The Active Service Panels are situated outside the entrance to the War Memorial Library and contain the names of 2,231 students, teachers and other staff who enlisted for active duty during the Second World War. Approximately 21 of these names appear more than once. For instance, the names of 13 teachers appear on more than one panel and six of the female students who were married during the war have their names listed with both their single and married surnames. Ongoing research being done by the school’s current alumni group, the Danforth Tech Society, has revealed approximately another 150 names that are missing from the Active Service Panels.

The Active Service Panels were designed by Group of Seven artist, A.J. Casson and his name appears at the bottom of each panel. All four panels were prepared by Danforth Tech’s Director of Art, Mr. Donald L. Howchin. The names were hand-lettered in a calligraphic form by Mr. Howchin. A somewhat different lettering style appears at the end of some alphabetic groups - these names were added prior to Danforth Tech’s 75th Anniversary that was celebrated in May 1998.

The War Memorial Library is situated on the top floor of the school. The doorway was designed by Danforth’s Architectural Drafting teacher, Mr. John I. Rempel. It was officially dedicated and unveiled by His Excellency Viscount Alexander of Tunis on Sunday, May 30, 1948. The Prayer of Dedication was given by H/Major The Reverend John W. Foote, V.C.

240 students and one teacher were killed while serving in the Second World War. Further research over the years indicated there were another 21 names which should have been included. Opened as Riverdale Technical School in 1923, the school’s name was changed to Danforth Technical School in 1932. It has the greatest number of students, graduates, teachers and other staff to have volunteered for military service or the Merchant Navy in the Second World War of any school in the British Commonwealth.

The Active Service Panels are situated outside the entrance to the War Memorial Library and contain the names of 2,231 students, teachers and other staff who enlisted for active duty during the Second World War.

The War Memorial Windows consists of six stained glass windows that pay tribute to the teachers, students and ex-students who served in the Second World War.

The Second World War Plaques lists the names of 241 former Danforth students and staff who died or were killed while on active service.

The George Stephen Memorial is located in the hallway to the War Memorial Library.

The Danforth Collegiate and Technical Institute War Memorial Windows consists of six stained glass windows that pay tribute to the teachers, students and ex-students who served in the Second World War. It was unveiled and dedicated on May 30, 1948, by His Excellency, Field Marshall, the Viscount Alexander of Tunis, K. G., Governor-General of Canada. There were some 1,200 people in the audience.

The windows were designed by Danforth Art Teacher, Mr. Cyril J. Travers.  Another Danforth teacher, Mr. Roy Foley, provided the interpretation of the symbolism of the War Memorial Windows. The windows are located in the War Memorial Library.

The Wise Administrator, upper panel of the first window - An Egyptian scene from ancient biblical times, the victims of depression and famine buying from providentially stored stocks of food supplies.

Freedom from Want, lower panel of the first window - About the emblems of agriculture and cornucopia—the symbol of plenty—are shown a man busy ploughing and the laden ship, symbols of industry, productive employment, and international trade.

The Eternal Struggle, upper panel of the second window - The heroic figure represents Christian, triumphantly vanquishing Apollyon, the evil one. The raised sword symbolizes man's victory over age-old fear and evils which have beset him since the dawn of time.

Freedom from Fear, lower panel of the second window - The figure in the window represents mans as travelling along obscure, uncertain, and even dangerous paths. Immediately before his feet is broken ground, suggestive of dangerous and treacherous footing. The lamp and the staff are emblematic of dependence on divine light and guidance. Above and behind the traveler are two guardian angels, one of whom is carrying a "starry light", which itself gives objective to the window's inscription.

The Canadian Coat of Arms, upper panel of the third window - The Coat of Arms of Canada, in full colour, complete with royal helmet, the crest and mantling. The crest is a lion holding in its paw a red maple leaf, which during the First World War became the symbol of sacrifice. Upon the quartered shield, in the upper right, is a red shield with three golden lions—the original arms of England. In the upper left, is a golden shield with a red lion enclosed in a border of two thin lines—the arms of Scotland. In the lower right, is the golden harp, the arms of Ireland. In the lower left are the three golden fleurs-de-lis.

The sprig of three maple leaves on a silver field are in the lower third of the shield. The draping of the helmet has deeply indented edges, suggestive of the slashings that this covering might be subjected to in battle. Supporting the crest, helmet, and shield is a lion on the right and the unicorn of the Royal Arms on the left. The lion rampant upholds a silver lance from which flies the Union Jack. The unicorn with chain and coronet upholds a lance from which flies a banner bearing the fleur-de-lis. Below the shield upon a wreath composed of roses, thistles, shamrocks and lilies is a scroll inscribed in Latin which translates to "from sea to sea".

The Student as a Mature Citizen, lower panel of the third window - The figure of a student, freshly graduated from university, and symbols: academic robes and scroll, T-square, wheel, book, model home, balances, retort and palette.

The Coat of Arms of the School, upper panel of the fourth window - The crest is the lamp of learning or of truth. The shield in the Coat of Arms depicts the symbols of several departments of the school: open book, palette, scissors and rolling pin, geared wheels and the retort. The maple leaves above the shield are suggestive of a loyalty to Canada.

The Student as a the Soldier in Arms, lower panel of the fourth window - The figure is a student representing the soldier in arms, in righteous anger, ready and alert to defend freedoms. He is clad in shining armour, the symbol of those spiritual convictions which motivate his actions. With him are two comrades-in-arms, equally determined and forthright. The torch, interpreted as the symbol of some high purpose, lofty ideal, or truth. At the feet of the soldiers are flowers of the youth; the stars are symbols of lofty aspirations. Upon the shield is the maple leaf, which provides incentive to loyal service.

The Signing of the Magna Carta, upper panel of the fifth window - The scene at Runnymede on the 17th of June 1215 when King John set the royal seal to the Great Charter. Fitzwalter with his shield of two red chevrons is spokesman for those seeking redress.

Freedom of Speech, lower panel of the fifth window - A citizen "speaking his thoughts", listened to by those who are critical of his views, yet there is evidence of respect for those views.

God the Creator, upper panel of the sixth window - This Supreme Being is shown as surrounded by the "six days of creation".

Freedom of Religion, lower panel of the sixth window - Three male figures: the man of Christian faith, holding his open Bible and looking upward to the God of his faith in reverent worship; on his right, an Arab holding a copy of the Koran and in an attitude of worship to his "Supreme Being"; on his left an East Indian in an attitude of worship.

240 students and one teacher were killed while serving in the Second World War. Further research over the years indicated there were another 21 names which should have been included. Opened as Riverdale Technical School in 1923, the school’s name was changed to Danforth Technical School in 1932. In 1945, the Beaches Businessmen's Association offered to donate a memorial fountain in remembrance of the citizens of Toronto who gave their lives in the two world wars, which was erected in 1946 at the entrance to Kew Gardens.

Originally, it was inscribed with only the dates of the First and Second World Wars. Later the dates of the Korean War were added. The dates for Canada’s mission in Afghanistan and the South African War were inscribed on October 27, 2020, by Sanderson Monuments. Residents Paul Szabunio, a Canadian army Veteran and Peter MacKay, former Minister of Defence, approached Beach historian Gene Domagala and Beaches-East York Councilor Brad Bradford to have these dates added.
